Protecting your washing machine from power surges
Voltage surges in the electrical network can damage many elements of an automatic machine. First of all, you need to take care of the main control unit, the repair of which will be expensive for the owner of the equipment. To avoid unexpected expenses when the power supply is unstable, it is better to take action in advance and protect the washing machine from power surges. Let's figure out what actions should be taken as part of the upcoming work.
Will a surge protector do the job?
The basic means of protecting any equipment powered by electricity is a surge protector. This element is built into the factory when assembling the washing machine, directly into the body of the unit. If there is a serious jump, the filter may become unusable, but it will protect other, more expensive parts of the machine from damage. The principle of operation of the surge filter is simple: it passes through only vibrations with a frequency of 50 GHz, more frequent or rare waves are blocked by the element.
Another function of the surge protector is to retain and transmit to grounding the reverse current waves created during the operation of an asynchronous electric motor. Thanks to this procedure, other components of the washing machine are relatively reliably protected from electric shock. If there were no power filter in the washing machine, then many parts would very often be subject to “attack by electrical waves.” We are talking about the following elements:
- heater;
- asynchronous engine;
- main control module;
- equipment control panels.
The filter element protects components not only from high vibrations of the electrical system, but also from low ones.If a part malfunctions, the operation of the washing machine is often completely blocked. Using a washing machine with a faulty surge protector is unsafe and incorrect.
Stabilizer
No preparatory measures can 100% protect washing equipment from damage. If a power surge occurs, we can only talk about a happy outcome in 70% of cases. In the remaining 30% of situations, you will have to repair expensive household appliances.
To protect washing and drying equipment, it is better to connect it to the network using a stabilizer.
You need to select a voltage stabilizer very carefully. Here it is important not to overpay the seller and at the same time ensure the safety of the washing machine. When choosing, pay special attention to the power of the unit. The indicator must be sufficient to provide the necessary power to all equipment connected to it. Calculate the minimum standard power of the stabilizer in advance; when calculating, you must not forget to take into account a small “power reserve” - about 20% of the total value.
The algorithm of actions that can be used when calculating the power of the stabilizer is quite simple:
- think about how many devices, in addition to the washing machine, will be protected by the purchased stabilizer;
- study the instructions for each piece of equipment, find in the manual the amount of power consumed by the equipment;
- add up all the values found (for example, you recorded a number of about 3.5 kW);
- add a small margin of 20% of the amount received.
In our case, the power of the potential stabilizer cannot be less than 4.2 kW (3.5 * 1.2 = 4.2).When purchasing a protective element, the value obtained by calculations can only be rounded up.
Another criterion that you should pay attention to when choosing a stabilizing element is the number of phases. When purchasing a protective product for a washing machine and other household appliances, buyers are wondering which stabilizer is suitable, single-phase or three-phase. This depends on the wiring of each individual house; in most cases, the electrical network of high-rise buildings is single-phase, but there are exceptions.
Therefore, study the electrical panel; it is always marked on the meter how many phases the electrical wiring has. If there is only one, then you will need a single-phase stabilizer; if there are three, then you can purchase either one three-phase protective element or three single-phase ones. However, when connecting several stabilizers at once, you cannot do without the help of a professional electrician.
When connecting the washing machine to the stabilizing element, be sure to install a residual current device or a circuit breaker for greater safety of the electrical network.
The RCD will protect washing equipment from strong voltage surges that go beyond the limits of the stabilizer. If you have no experience working with electrical wiring, it is better to entrust the installation of protective devices to a specialist.
