Replacing the drain pump in a washing machine
There are many different models of washing machines on the modern household appliances market. And depending on which model we will change the pump (pump), we will decide how we will get to it.
Installing a new pump through the bottom of the washing machine
This method of replacing the drain pump will be relevant for most machines from the following manufacturers: Indesit, Samsung, Beko, Ardo, Whirpool, Candy, LG, Ariston. The design of these models does not have a bottom or it is removable. Therefore, it is easier to replace the pump from below.
Askoll drain pumps are most often used for replacement. They are fixed with three self-tapping screws.
- First, disconnect the washing machine from the electricity and turn off the tap.
- Then carefully place the washing machine on its side, laying something down so as not to scratch the body. It is necessary to place the machine so that the corner with the pump is at the top.
- Then remove the lower front panel of the machine.
- After this, you need to unscrew the screws securing the drain pump to the housing.
- Prepare an empty container. We will need it when we disconnect the pipes. As you remove the pipes, water will flow out of them.
- We remove the pipes by first loosening and removing the clamps. And disconnect the contact connector with the wires.
- Next, we take a new working pump and install it in place of the old one.
- Now all we have to do is assemble the machine, return it to a vertical position and carry out a test wash.
You can see this method of replacing the pump in the following video instructions:
Replacing the pump with removing the front wall
To replace the drain pump on some machines, we will need to remove the front part of the body. Typically, this replacement method is suitable for household appliances from the following manufacturers: AEG, Bosch, Siemens.
Most models from Germany are designed in such a way that the best option to get to the drain pump is to remove the front wall of the housing. The most popular pump model is Askoll. By the way, they are usually quite inexpensive.
How to remove the front part of the washing machine body (AEG, Bosch, Siemens)?
- First we will remove the housing cover. To do this, you need to unscrew the screws. They are usually located on the back of the washing machine. Then the lid must be pushed away from you, being on the front side of the machine. That is, on the side where the hatch is. With such a push, the hatch will separate from the fixing grooves and can be easily removed.
- After this we need to remove the front panel. To do this, remove the dispenser completely. Then unscrew the front panel. Disconnecting this part from the wires is necessary. Just carefully place it on top of the washing machine.
- Next, open the panel, behind which there is a drain pump at the bottom of the machine. And then unscrew the filter. When we unscrew it, some water will flow out. Therefore, we will need to place a rag, or better yet, a container to hold water.
- Now we need to unscrew the screws that secure the front wall from below. Usually there are two.
- Then we need to remove the clamp that secures the hatch cuff. To do this, open the machine door, find the clamp, carefully loosen it and remove it.
- Unscrew the remaining screws and carefully remove the front wall of the case. We do this slowly. And as soon as there is a sufficient gap, we put our hand in there and disconnect the wires from the hatch lock. After this, nothing is holding the wall back and it can be removed.
So we got to the pump. After that we need to remove it. To do this, unscrew the retaining bolts and open the latches (if any), loosen and remove the fixing clamps.
We also recommend photographing the position of the pump and the method of fixing it. This will help you during assembly.
After you separate the pump, you will need to replace it with a new one and reassemble the machine in the reverse order.
Replacing the drain pump by removing the rear wall
This pump replacement option is suitable for the following models: Zanussi and Electrolux. The design features of Zanussi and Electrolux do not allow this part to be replaced using the two previous options, since they do not have a removable bottom and a separable front part of the body. Therefore, all work will be done through the back of the washing machine.
Before you start disassembling the machine, you need to pour out all the water from it. To do this, you need to place the drain hose on the floor. You can place a low container under the water or remove the puddle that appears with a rag. Next, unscrew the screws securing the upper part of the case. Next, remove the cover. To do this we need to move it back. After this, we also unscrew the fixing screws from the back of the body and from the sides and the screws that fix the intake valve casing. When all fastening elements are removed, we can remove the rear part of the machine body.
- Remove the wires that are connected to the pump.
- Then we remove the entire snail (together with the pump and pipes). To do this, you need to open the latches.
- We unscrew the screws and open the latches that secure the pump.
- We take a photo of the pump location. This will help us during assembly.
- We remove the old pump, clean its place from possible debris and install a new one.
- Then we assemble the machine in reverse order and perform a test wash.
Happy replacement!
