Replacing the pressure switch for a washing machine (relay, level sensor)
Replacing the pressure switch is necessary when the washing machine fills too much water. This is the most common malfunction with these symptoms. Also, poor-quality pressing of laundry can also be associated with this breakdown.
A pressure switch, also known as a relay and level sensor, is necessary to control the amount of water entering the machine’s tank. And if you are convinced that this is the problem, then you need to buy a new level sensor in order to replace the one that is broken.
How to choose and where to buy a level switch for a washing machine?
In order to buy exactly the pressure switch that we need, it is worth understanding one simple thing: You need to purchase exactly the part that is suitable for your model of washing machine. And to do this, you will need to clarify the exact full name of your household appliance.
In general, level relays can be of several types. More precisely:
- Three-pin
- And two-chamber
The relay is marked with a two-digit number. The first number represents the group number, and the other number represents the contact number. You don’t have to worry about these designations. Just remember the name and model of your washing machine.
You can buy a new sensor at service centers that repair large household appliances. You can also purchase it online. To do this, use any search engine and find those organizations that sell spare parts for washing machines. And just call them.
How does a level sensor work?
Let's look at how the level relay functions in the machine. Before starting any wash, it is necessary to fill the tank with water. Water passes through the inlet hose from the water pipe into the washing machine tank. When water is collected, it enters the dispenser, where it washes away the washing powder or other detergent that you use for washing.
When there is already enough water in the washing machine to wash, the pressure switch reports this to the control module. The module, in turn, signals that filling must be stopped. In the event that the level sensor has become unusable, it does not inform the module that the water filling needs to be stopped. This way the machine continues to fill with water.

How to replace a pressure switch (level switch) with your own hands?
In order to get to the pressure switch, we need to remove the upper part of the washing machine body. It is also called a lid. The cover is secured with two screws located on the back of the machine. After unscrewing them, you must push the cover from the front of the machine back. This is done so that it comes out of the grooves. And it could be removed.
In most washing machine models, the level sensor is located on the upper left side. In order to remove the pressure switch, you will need to loosen the hose clamp and tighten the hose itself. Then remove all wire terminals.
If you're worried about not being able to remember the position of the wires, you can take a photo with your phone or camera before removing them.
Before installing a new pressure switch, make sure that the terminals are not covered with any deposits and that the hose is not clogged. If necessary, these parts can be further cleaned.
Next, we remove the non-working level sensor and replace it with a purchased working sensor. Then we put the lid back in place and run a test wash. That's all there was to it. And now all we can do is wish you good luck in replacing the pressure switch yourself!
