How to replace a bearing in an LG direct drive washing machine?
The following “symptoms” will indicate that it’s time to replace the bearing on an LG machine: weak spin, grinding noise and noise when the drum rotates. Such repairs are classified as complex; to repair, you will have to completely disassemble the machine. We'll tell you what tools you'll need for the job, how to gain access to the inside of the tank, and what to pay attention to.
Tools and accessories
At the first sign of a malfunction, it is difficult to understand that the problem is worn out bearings. The “symptoms” will not be expressed enough, and not everyone will be able to guess why the direct-drive washing machine began to knock. As time passes and the unit wears out more, wear marks may appear on the back of the tank. Also, when rocking the drum with your hand, you will notice quite a bit of play, and when spinning, the machine will begin to hum and make noise like a rocket engine. With such obvious signs, it is easier to diagnose a breakdown.
You need to change the bearings on an LG machine as soon as possible, otherwise the shaft will gradually collapse, and there will be a need to change the tank-drum assembly completely.
Before repairing the machine, you should prepare the tools and parts that will be needed in the process. First you need to purchase bearings and an oil seal for a direct drive washing machine. It is important to find out the model and serial number of your “home assistant” and buy spare parts that are suitable for it. Here are a few examples of what size components will be required for certain machines:
- models F 1068 LD, ElG WD 1030 R, WD 1274 FB, WD 8022 CG, WD 8023 CB, WD 8050 FB, WD 8074 FB, WD 10130, WD 10150 S – oil seal 37x66x5/12, bearing 205-206;
- LG WD 1050 F, LG WD 1074 FB – oil seal 35.75x66x5, bearing 205-206;
- LG WD 6002 C, ElG WD 6007 C and WD 6212 – oil seal 25x50x10, bearing 203-204.
What is an oil seal? This is an O-ring that protects the bearing from water. In most cases, it is the damaged rubber band that causes the knot to collapse. If cracks appear on the gasket, liquid seeps into the metal elements, washing away the lubricant, which accelerates wear.
To change components yourself, prepare the following equipment:
- screwdrivers (positive and negative);
- hammer;
- bit;
- a set of keys of different diameters;
- pliers;
- WD-40 aerosol;
- metal pin;
- moisture-resistant sealant (required when reassembling the tank).
For a comfortable renovation you need a lot of free space. The ideal option is to take the direct drive washing machine to the garage. If this is not possible, disconnect the equipment from the house communications and drag it to the center of a spacious room. When all the tools and components are ready, you can begin disassembling the machine.
Removing the tank-drum assembly
To change the bearings, you will have to remove the plastic tub and drum from the body of the direct drive washing machine. The equipment must be disconnected from the network, as well as from the water supply and sewage system. The drain and inlet hoses should be disconnected from the back wall of the washing machine. The further algorithm of actions will be as follows:
- drain the water remaining in the machine pipes. This can be done by unscrewing the garbage filter. It is located below, behind the base panel of the case. Remove the plug and collect the liquid in a container;
- remove the powder receptacle;
- remove the top cover of the case by unscrewing the two bolts securing it;
- Unscrew the screws holding the control panel. It is not necessary to disconnect the wires; it is better to carefully remove the panel and hang it on a special hook on the side wall of the case;
- Open the hatch door, bend the sealing collar, and lift the clamp securing it. Remove the ring holder from the machine;
- Unscrew the screws around the perimeter of the front wall, remove the front panel;
- remove the top metal bar, remove the counterweights;
- Use pliers to loosen the clamp of the pipe connected to the dispenser. Remove the tube, take out the detergent hopper;
- disconnect the pressure switch connection;
- disconnect the drain pipe from the washing machine tank. It is secured with a clamp;
- remove the back wall of the machine by removing all screws;
- take a photo of the wiring diagram, this will help with reassembly;
- Unscrew the direct drive main screw. To do this, you will have to fix the motor;
It is not allowed to block the engine by inserting screwdrivers into its connectors; there are coils there that can easily be damaged.
- to remove the central bolt, hold the tank, preventing it from rotating, throw a wrench with your free hand and unscrew the fasteners;
- remove the motor cover;
- reset the electric motor chips, disconnect the wiring;
- remove the engine by unscrewing the screws holding it;
- disconnect the contacts from the heating element, remove the tubular heater;
- remove shock-absorbing elements. To remove the damper bushing, press its latches from the inside and pull it towards you.
Now nothing interferes with the extraction of the node. All parts and wires connected to the main tank of the machine have been removed or disconnected.You can lift the tank, removing it from the springs, pull it out of the body and place it on a flat, hard surface.
We change bearings and seals
In modern direct drive washing machines of the LG brand, the tank is collapsible. You don’t have to saw it, as is the case with non-separable containers; you just need to unscrew the screws holding the two halves of the assembly together.
After removing the bolts, you can lift the top of the tank and move it to the side. Further work will take place with the other half. It is necessary to knock the drum out of it. Place a block or chisel on the bushing and tap the tool with a mallet. The drum will fall out of the plastic container.
The next step will be to reinstall the components. Washing machines LG is equipped with two bearings - internal and external. To begin with, the “distant” ring is knocked out - the chisel is placed on its holder and tapped with a hammer. The position of the chisel should be changed by placing it crosswise. The outer element is removed in the same way.
Before installing new components, be sure to clean the seat from debris, rust, and old lubricant residues. Having finished cleaning, you can install new bearings. The ring is placed in the socket and driven into place. It is necessary to hit exclusively on the outer ring, this will help not damage the part. An oil seal is placed on top.
During the installation process, it is important to treat the bearings and oil seal with a special protective lubricant; it will prevent water from entering the unit.
To prevent the bearings from wearing out prematurely, do not overload the washing machine, avoid spinning at maximum speed, and level the machine to prevent vibrations in the body. Then repair of the unit will not be required soon.
