How to change the shock absorber on a Whirlpool washing machine?
A terrible noise, knocking, clanging during the spin process is direct evidence that it is time to replace the shock absorber in the Whirlpool washing machine. If you don’t want to waste your time, just call a specialist, and he will quickly and efficiently carry out the repair. But if you want to save money and do everything yourself, read the instructions below. This will help you avoid many mistakes and troubles.
Getting access to broken elements
Any repair of a washing machine begins with disconnecting the equipment from communications: water supply, electricity, sewerage. The disconnected hoses must be twisted and secured to the back panel of the washing machine. Now you can move the unit to a place convenient for manipulation and begin repairs.
- First step: removing the Whirlpool top cover. To do this, you need to unscrew the two screws on the panel lugs, slide the cover back, lift it and disconnect it. The rinse aid compartment contains a plastic tab. Click on it and pull out the detergent dispenser (powder receptacle) from the niche.
- Find and unscrew the screw on the side of the control panel. Also remove the fasteners located next to the powder receptacle. Remove the panel itself and hang it on the right side of the case (be careful with the plastic latches). Be careful not to damage the wiring.
- Now you can put the machine on the back of the case and unscrew the screws from the front, near the legs. Next step: with the Whirlpool machine door open, pry up the clamp holding the rubber cuff. Loosen and remove it. Tuck the cuff itself inside the washing machine so that it does not interfere with your work.
- Disconnect the front part of the unit housing. The wiring from the hatch locking device will follow it; it will need to be carefully separated. This way you will have access to the shock absorbers and can change them.
Important! To make your work comfortable, remove adjacent parts as necessary - this will free up space and increase the accuracy of your manipulations.
Some repairmen claim that to remove the shock absorbers, you must completely disassemble the Whirlpool machine and even remove the tank. It will be easier to replace the part, but you will also add more work to yourself. We try to take the shortest possible route.
Changing elements
First, shake the shock absorbers to make sure they are faulty. Unscrew the lower fasteners connecting the parts to the machine body. At the top, the shock absorbers are attached to the tank using plastic elements; to remove them you will need a 13.2 mm drill. Insert the drill into the screwdriver and unscrew the fasteners. Separate broken items.
Before changing parts, make sure that you do not mix up the right and left shock absorbers. Install and screw the new parts to the body and tank. In practice, the original bolts supplied with the shock absorbers are too long and need to be shortened by literally a couple of millimeters. Otherwise, they may jam the drum during installation. Shake the tank and check how the parts work. Reassemble the Whirlpool in reverse order. If you have questions about DIY repairs, we suggest you watch the instructional video.
