Restoration of the washing machine cross
The crosspiece is an important element of the washing machine. It is with its help that the tank and drum are connected. Usually the part is made of soft metal, so after several years of operation of the machine it becomes deformed, and repairs become necessary. How is the washing machine crosspiece restored? Is it possible to do the work yourself? Will it be possible to restore the part, or is it easier to immediately replace it with a new one? Let's look into the nuances.
What crosspieces can be restored?
Restoring the crosspiece of a washing machine is not possible in all cases. Sometimes the damage is so severe that there is simply no point in repairing it. We'll figure out when the part can be restored.
When it comes to repairing a spider, this process means restoring the surface of its shaft at the locations of the bearings and/or the bushing located under the oil seal. It is allowed to restore components when wear appears on the metal. “Grooves” on the shaft can form for several reasons.
- Untimely replacement of bearings. When the rings begin to crumble, significant play appears and the shaft has fairly free movement. Due to this, the oil seal quickly wears out, and it is no longer the rubber seal itself that begins to “walk” along the bushing, but a metal insert designed to give it rigidity. This impact causes deep “grooves” to appear on the surface.
- Making a bushing under the oil seal. In this case, the damage to the part is less significant. The “grooves” will be shallow and will practically not interfere with the operation of the unit.
- The appearance of wear on the cross shaft itself at the seat of the “main” bearing (located closer to the oil seal). When the ring wears out, the mechanism may jam slightly, and then a fairly deep “groove” is “wiped” under the race.
In most cases, deformation of the cross occurs due to wear of the bearings, which is why it is so important to replace broken rings and oil seals in a timely manner.
Thus, it is advisable to restore the cross only if a wear has formed on its shaft or bushing. If a part bursts or has other serious damage, it is better to replace it immediately, otherwise the problem will recur. How does recovery happen?
Repairing a cross at home without the necessary skills will be problematic. Every average person can cope with disassembling an automatic machine and dismantling the part, but then you will have to work with special equipment. Therefore, it is better to remove the element and take it to a turner for further restoration.
To restore the crosspiece, you will have to separate it from the drum.
The algorithm of actions will be as follows:
- turn off the power to the washing machine;
- disconnect the “home assistant” from the water supply and sewerage;
- remove the lower trim panel;
- drain the remaining water from the system through a garbage filter;
- move the washer away from the wall to have free access to all sides of the body;
- remove the top cover;
- pull out the powder receptacle;
- unscrew the bolts around the perimeter of the control panel, move the “tidy” to the side;
- pull out the clamps securing the cuff and insert the elastic into the drum;
- remove the rear panel of the case;
- disconnect from the tank all wires, sensors and parts that interfere with its removal (heating element, motor, drain pipe, pressure switch, etc.);
- Having dealt with the shock absorbers, remove the tank from the washing machine;
- disassemble the tank by unscrewing the fixing screws around the circumference and dealing with the latches;
- pull out the drum and disconnect the crosspiece from it (by unscrewing the bolts or drilling out the factory fasteners).
A turner will help you correctly restore the crosspiece. It is important that the craftsman has at his disposal a machine suitable for the work ahead, into which the part from the washing machine will “fit”.
What happens next? If the problem is damage to the seat under the bearings, it is necessary to weld the groove. The surface is then turned on a lathe in the centers to maintain alignment of the sleeve, shaft and both bearings. So, what will you have to do to restore the drum cross of an automatic machine?
- Weld the shaft in the working areas.
- Grind the surface to smooth out the areas repaired by welding.
- Press a new bushing onto the shaft.
- Grind the bushing to maintain alignment of the unit.
The new bushing must be either non-ferrous metal or stainless steel. Since in an automatic machine it is constantly exposed to an aggressive environment, and if it is made of ferrous metal, the part will quickly (literally within a few washes) become unusable.
After the cross is restored, it is attached to the drum. Reassembling the washing machine is carried out in the reverse order. If during the work you discover damage not only to the shaft and bushing, but also to the bearings, it is better to immediately dismantle the old ones and press in new rings.
