How to shorten a washing machine drain hose
Shortening the drain hose of the washing machine is sometimes the only way out if its length is several times greater than the distance required to connect to the sewer. Twisting will cause delays in draining, and simply cutting will make it impossible to use the special tips. To do everything correctly and without further inconvenience, read the instructions below.
Just cut it off
It seems that the only correct and affordable option is to simply trim off the extra centimeters. This would be the case if the drain hoses did not have special plastic tips necessary for reliable and convenient connection to fittings, tees and other methods of connecting the pipe to the sewer pipe. In the future, finding a suitable replacement for them will not be easy and expensive, so you should understand that by removing them, you lose the opportunity to organize a full drain without additional gaskets and clamps.
If the last point is not important, since the hose without reinforcement is inserted into a pipe outlet or placed in a sink, bathtub or toilet, there is no need to worry about preserving the ends. Then the sequence will be as follows:
- turn off the water supply tap by turning the corresponding valve on the water pipe;
- turn off the power supply by unplugging the plug from the socket or lowering the corresponding breaker in the panel;
- pull out the drain hose;
Important! Be prepared for water remaining in the hose.
- measure the required length and put a mark with a marker;
- Using a sharp knife, cut off the excess piece.
All that remains is to return the disconnected hose to its place, as well as turn on the water supply tap and connect to the power supply. A little testing won't hurt either: run the shortest cycle and go to spin mode. If water flows out of the hose properly, everything is done correctly.
Let's save the plastic tips
This option is not suitable for everyone. When the drain hose is connected to the sewer through a siphon or tee, it is important to retain the provided ends. In such cases, a pipe that is too long is shortened in another way.
- Disconnect the drain hose.
- We measure the available space from the drain hole on the body of the machine to the connection point to the sewer pipe. Precision is important here: the hose should not be stretched.
- Cut the hose in half.
- We take one of the halves and cut it as much as necessary to reduce the length.
Important! It is recommended not to throw away the cut piece of hose, as it may be useful for re-extension in the future.
- We take out a special connector. It is a plastic adapter and can be purchased by diameter at any service store for $0.3-1.
- We first pull one part tightly onto the connector, then the other.
- We fix the position of the hoses with silicone, metal clamps or electrical tape.
We connect the shortened hose back and test the machine for normal drainage. The test takes place in the standard way: we start the cycle and go to the “Spin” mode. The main thing is that there are no leaks at the connection point. If drops are noticed, tighten the fixing elements tighter.
