Why doesn't my dryer dry things well?
Any household appliance can fail over time, or if operating rules are violated. If the dryer does not dry things well, although visually everything is in order with the equipment, then you should examine a number of factors that could cause this to happen. It is far from a fact that the “home assistant” is broken; perhaps the situation can be easily corrected without complex repairs. Let's figure out why the quality of drying began to suffer.
What caused this “symptom”?
It is not always possible to quickly understand why the dryer has stopped processing things efficiently. This is due to the fact that there are many reasons for this behavior. Some are easy to check, while others require partial disassembly of the device. The entire list looks like this:
- sudden changes in voltage in the network;
- damage to the heating element;
- failure of the temperature sensor;
- problems with the electronics unit.
Do not rush to call a repair service; perhaps you yourself will figure out at home what to do with the equipment in order to restore its normal operation.
Power surge and heating element
Alas, very often even in big cities there are serious problems with the power grid. What can we say about the outskirts of cities, the private sector, as well as small settlements. During the day, the voltage can drop to 180 Volts, rise to 250, and then drop again. In such an unstable situation, only an uninterruptible power supply will help save expensive household appliances. Most often, an uninterruptible power supply is purchased to protect a computer, but it also works great with a dryer.
If there is no such protection, then first of all, the heating element, as well as the electronics and power supply unit, suffer from a sharp voltage surge. Fortunately, a new heating element is not very expensive, so replacing it is not difficult, which cannot be said about power supplies and electronics, the price of which can reach 50% of the cost of a brand new dryer. The heating element most often breaks due to the fact that it is most responsible for heating the air in the drum. Why does the heating element usually fail?
- The presence of debris in the drum, such as wool, fluff, threads, etc.
- Incorrect operation of the temperature sensor, which mistakenly overloads the heating element, forcing it to work at the limit and thus shorten its service life.
- Gross violation of equipment operating standards and launching several work cycles without a break, which should be at least 40 minutes. This list also includes water getting into the heating element.
That’s why you need to not only strictly follow the rules for using the dryer, but also, just in case, purchase an uninterruptible power supply that will protect your favorite “home assistant.”
Thermal fuse or circuit board
The thermal fuse is usually located directly next to the heating element. You can test it only after partially disassembling the household appliances, because you will have to get to the heating element. The heating element can be installed in different parts of the dryer body, which depends on the model and brand of equipment, but most often it is located in the rear part of the body. What should I do to check an element?
- Disconnect the equipment from the electrical outlet.
- Unscrew the retaining screws from the rear wall of the case and move it to the side.
- Find the thermal fuse located in a plastic box near the heater.
- Open the box and take out the part you need.
- Set the multimeter to resistance testing mode and connect the tester probes to the fuse.
- If the element is working properly, then the resistance will be zero, and if the multimeter shows an open circuit, then the part has burned out.
- Replace the burnt thermal fuse with a new one of the same type, or with a similar one with suitable amperes, if you cannot find an original spare part.
- Assemble the “home assistant” according to the instructions in reverse order and be sure to check its functionality with an idle work cycle.
It's easy to fix the fuse yourself, but if the cause of the breakdown is in the control board, you'll have to call a repairman. The difficulty lies not only in correct diagnosis, which is impossible without special equipment and software, but also in difficult repairs, which cannot be handled by a person without experience and knowledge. The only thing that can be done at home without calling a specialist is a quick inspection of the board visually, as well as using a multimeter. A methodical check of each element of the control board will allow you to identify damaged areas and transfer this information to the repair service employee.
Often, a simple inspection of the board, even without using a multimeter, helps to verify the presence of a problem, since burnt contacts, tracks and sections of the module are visible even with the naked eye.
If you are unable to disassemble the dryer yourself and inspect the circuit board, then it is better to leave this work to professionals so as not to accidentally damage the equipment even more.In any case, there is not much point in this process, since the service technician will still have to independently inspect the part for damage, even if you do this yourself in advance. Therefore, feel free to call a specialist so that he can carry out a full diagnosis and advise either repairing the module or completely replacing it.
