Washing a skirt in a washing machine
A skirt made of wool and drape allows you to look elegant and feminine even in winter. There is only one “but” - taking care of such things is many times more difficult than taking care of summer knitted options. Is it possible to wash a skirt in a washing machine, how to properly organize the cleaning process and is it permissible to iron it? We will answer all your questions with step-by-step instructions and expert recommendations.
Let's collect information about the skirt
Before purchasing a new wool skirt, many questions arise regarding its subsequent washing. But in fact, there is nothing impossible in cleaning this product - standard rules for caring for delicate fabrics apply to it. If you have previously cared for wool clothes, there will be no difficulties.
There is no difference in the skirt model. Mini, maxi, pleats, pencil, bell or tulip - it all depends on personal preferences and body shape. The shape of the product has virtually no effect on the nuances of washing.
In any case, before washing, the first thing you need to do is study the label. On the tag, the manufacturer indicates all the nuances of caring for the item at home, encrypting the information in symbols. The type of recommended cleaning is determined by the printed images:
- a bathtub with a hand lowered into it - hand wash only;
- a bath with numbers in the center - the maximum water heating temperature;
- a square crossed vertically – vertical drying without spinning;
- empty circle - dry clean only;
- a crossed out triangle means a ban on the use of bleach.
If there is an image of an empty circle on the label, then the skirt cannot be washed - only dry cleaning is allowed!
There may be other icons that must be deciphered before washing. Many of the symbols below are signed with words, but for reliability it is better to “punch” the image on the Internet. Afterwards, all you have to do is follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
How to wash it properly?
If the factory label is lost or the information printed on it cannot be read, then you will have to proceed in a different way. In this case, you should follow the standard rules for washing woolen items. There are several main recommendations:
- do not wash in water heated above 35 degrees (at high temperatures, woolen items shrink greatly, even if they contain synthetic fibers);
- do not stretch the wool, do not twist it or rub it too hard (the knitting is easy to damage);
- When cleaning in a washing machine, choose only the delicate cycle, but it is better to give preference to hand washing;
- put in a drum in a special protective bag;
- use liquid detergents without bleaches and abrasive components;
- add a softening conditioner to the powder receptacle (the homemade equivalent is a little food vinegar).
Skirts made of wool or drape are washed in warm water heated to a temperature of 30-35 degrees.
It is important to thoroughly rinse the detergent from the skirt, for which you start a double rinse or constantly change the water until it becomes clear. You cannot wring out the wool, just roll the product into a roll and lightly press it. Woolen items are dried vertically in natural conditions, hanging on a belt over a bathtub or basin to allow water to drain freely.
Kilt style skirt
The biggest concern when washing is a skirt with pleats. Pleated products wrinkle faster and may lose their original appearance when rotated in a drum. To prevent this, you should adhere to several rules:
Pleated skirts are recommended to be washed by hand only!
- wash only by hand;
- do not wrinkle or rub, taking care of the integrity of the folds;
- pre-soak the kilt: dissolve the detergent in warm water, dip the skirt in the solution and leave for 15-20 minutes;
- add conditioner to remove static electricity from the item;
- rinse and change the water until it becomes clear;
- Do not wring out miniskirts, but hang them by the belt to allow water to drain freely;
- Long skirts should be slightly pressed, pressing along the length, so that the fabric does not stretch under its own weight.
If you follow standard recommendations, the pleating will remain intact and intact. There is a safer option: fold the pleats, thread them, place the kilt in a narrow wash bag or stocking and put it in the washing machine on a delicate cycle. In this case, the product will be clean and absolutely smooth, which will save on ironing.
How to iron properly?
But the skirt does not always look the same after washing. More often than not, even with delicate care, the wool becomes wrinkled and wrinkled, which forces you to do ironing. Ironing is not contraindicated for woolen products; the main thing is to remember a few points:
- It is better to iron woolen skirts in a semi-wet state;
- Before ironing, turn the item inside out;
- It is enough to heat the iron to medium temperature (2 points);
- iron only through gauze, otherwise shiny marks will remain on the surface of the skirt;
- When ironing, moisten the material with a spray bottle.
The ironing order is as follows: first we go over the lining with an iron, then the belt, and then the main part. Folds are better ironed using cardboard blanks placed under the fabric. The ideal option is modern steamers that allow you to remove creases without coming into contact with the product. It is recommended to hang the ironed skirt indoors and leave it for 10-15 minutes, and then put it in the closet.
