Can a camel hair pillow be washed in a washing machine?
The key to a healthy sleep is not only a high-quality, but also a clean pillow. If you buy bedding made from camel wool, then you should take into account not only a lot of advantages, but also difficulties in care. The natural composition requires delicate cleansing. You can wash camel hair pillows in the washing machine, but with some reservations. We’ll tell you in more detail what to fear and avoid.
Features of using an automatic machine
Products made from natural wool can be machine washed, but only if certain rules are followed. First of all, this concerns the set mode. Ideally, you should turn on the “Wool” program, designed specifically for gentle cleaning of expensive knitted items. If there is no special button, then select a valid alternative: “Delicate” or “Manual”.
The second important point is the heating temperature of the water. If the temperature in the drum is more than 30 degrees, the pillow will shrink and lose its natural softness. There is no need to take risks; it is better to choose the minimum degrees - “30”, “20” or “0”.
Wool is washed at 30 degrees!
The spin setting also requires special attention. Camel wool, like other delicate materials, does not like sharp twisting and high speeds. The maximum permitted intensity of drum rotation is 400 rpm, but it is better to minimize the risks and turn it off altogether. This way the probability of deformation and shrinkage will approach zero.
The fourth point is the choice of detergent. A properly selected composition will preserve the structure of the material, enhance softness and quickly remove bacteria from the fibers. The ideal option would be to use gels with lanolin extract, which can improve the properties of camel wool. We say an unequivocal “no” to powders, the granules of which do not dissolve in cold water and spoil the product.
Traditional care
Manufacturers recommend not to take risks and abandon the automatic washing machine in favor of hand washing. This way you can remove the mechanical impact and carry out the most gentle cleansing. The cleaning process is simple.
- Fill a large basin or bathtub with warm water (maximum temperature 30 degrees).
- Dissolve detergent in water.
- Dip the pillow into the soapy solution.
- Soak the product for 5-5.5 hours.
- Carefully drain the water.
- Pour a portion of clean water and rinse the pillow.
- We repeat the “drain-rinse” chain until the water in the container becomes completely clear.
You cannot wring out the pillow using the standard method - the wool becomes deformed with strong pressure and twisting. To remove moisture, you need to gently press on the products, moving from the center to the edges. Then we move on to drying.
Drying the product
Woolen products are capricious not only when cleaning, but also when drying. An incorrectly dried item may become deformed and lose its initial hardness or color. To avoid “surprises”, you will have to strictly follow the instructions:
- lay a dry terry towel or blanket on a flat surface;
- carefully place the pillow on the towel;
- straighten the folds on the pillow;
- cover the top with a second dry towel or flannel diaper;
- periodically, when wet, change the bedding;
- Turn the pillow over regularly to ensure even drying.
For drying, choose a ventilated, shaded place so that the wool is not exposed to direct sunlight.There is no need to beat the filler - after 2-3 hours of natural drying, the product will return to its original shape.
