Washing without powder in a washing machine
Surely, everyone has at least once wondered whether it is possible to wash without powder in an automatic machine? There was even a major experiment conducted on this matter. We'll tell you how the inspection of washing equipment from different brands ended and what conclusion the experts came to.
Experimental conditions
Not long ago, Roskontrol specialists decided to conduct an unusual test. The idea was to test whether machines could wash without powder. Identical sized pieces of cotton fabric with identical stains were prepared. On the white canvas there were traces of grass, coffee, wine, cherries, tea and stubborn grease stains. The following models of automatic washing machines participated in the experiment:
- LG F1296TD3;
- Electrolux EWS1064SDU;
- Samsung WF60F4EBW2W;
- Kandy GC4 1061 D;
- Bosch WLK 20160 OE;
- Hotpoint Ariston WMUF 5050 B.
The washing machines operated on the standard “Cotton 60” cycle. That is, the duration of washing and the temperature of water heating were approximately the same. No detergents were used during the experiment.
Tempting savings
Washing things without powder would allow owners of automatic machines to save a lot of money. If you calculate, on average, starting one cycle costs users $0.1 per 1 kg of things. This conclusion can be made by “studiing” the instructions for the equipment and looking at the consumption rates of water, electricity and detergents.
Of the $0.15 spent on washing one kilogram of laundry, about $0.12 is spent on powder.
Moreover, you can talk about such figures if you use regular washing powder. Housewives who use gels, capsules or special tablets for washing pay even more per cycle.It turns out that if you refuse detergents, you can wash your clothes almost free of charge.
The offer to wash without powder is quite tempting. This way you can significantly reduce costs and save the “family” budget. But how feasible will such savings be? Will the washing machine be able to freshen the laundry if the detergent drawer remains empty? Or will household members have to wear dirty clothes? Let's see what the experiment showed.
What are the results?
After the washing machines finished the cycle, Roskontrol specialists immediately took the pieces of fabric out of the drums. The first conclusion was disappointing - none of the machines participating in the experiment could completely wash a piece of cotton without powder. Stains from wine, natural coffee, tea, meat dishes, traces of grass and berries appeared on the material to one degree or another. The cotton pieces were then examined on a light table. And here the experts were able to give a more complete assessment of the performance of each washing machine model.
- Samsung. Compared to washing machines of other brands, Samsung showed poor performance. The machine was unable to completely remove a single stain. Traces of cherries, greens, wine and other products “showed off” on the cotton. Experts came to the conclusion that the drum rotation algorithms were not configured and developed sufficiently.
- Bosch. The washing machine of the German brand managed to be among the leaders. Even without powder, the technique removed grease stains, red wine and coffee stains. But, to the surprise of experts, Bosch was unable to remove the “berry” stains. Why this turned out to be impossible for the machine could not be established.
- Electrolux. The washing machine also could not cope with the task, like cheaper models.Without cleaning agents, the machine completely removed only the wine stain from the fabric. All other stains were partially washed off.
- Hotpoint-Ariston. The washing machine showed average results. Without the powder, she almost completely removed only the trace of red wine. The remaining stains could not be dealt with.
- Kandy. The budget automatic machine demonstrated high quality indicators for washing clothes without the use of detergents. It is in no way inferior to more expensive models such as Electrolux or Hotpoint-Ariston. The technology was able to cope with “wine” contamination. The remaining stains were partially removed.
- LG. The Korean machine outperformed most of its competitors, successfully removing stains from wine and black tea. But the miracle, of course, did not happen. It was not possible to remove the remaining stains without cleaning products.
Not a single washing machine has been able to completely remove stubborn, stubborn stains without adding washing powder.
Therefore, no matter how ultra-modern your washing machine is, you cannot do without the use of detergents. In principle, the machines are able to cope with light, fresh dirt without powder. However, to remove “berry” and “grass” marks, coffee or tea stains, you will need more “heavy artillery” than just warm water. If the washing machine cuvette is empty, the machine will simply rinse the items first in warm water, then in cold water. It is clear that you should not expect excellent results from such washing. Therefore, it is still not possible to completely abandon the use of powder.
