Washing machine under the sink in the bathroom
In order to increase the functionality of the bathroom and save useful space in the kitchen, many residents of Khrushchev’s apartments take this step, namely installing a washing machine under the sink. This option may not be the best, but when there is really nowhere to put the machine, then you can put up with this. And if everything is done correctly, then there will be no discomfort. And most importantly, you need to choose a suitable washing machine, which will be discussed further.
Selecting sizes
The main criterion for choosing a washing machine for the sink will be its size.
- The depth of automatic washing machines varies from 33 to 82 cm, it is clear that if you install a machine that is too large, there is no space, and it is inconvenient to approach the sink. Therefore, the optimal depth is 50 cm, provided that the sink has a maximum depth of 60 cm. If the sink is smaller, then the washing machine should be narrower, so that there is a gap for the communications behind the back wall.
- The height of the machine cannot exceed 70 cm. If you fix a sink with a height of 17 cm above a standard machine with a height of 82-85 cm, then it will be extremely difficult for a small person to wash himself, and children will not be able to reach the tap at all. The solution is to substitute a chair.
- As for the width of the washing machine, it is not important here. Everything will depend on location.
Review of mini washing machines
The choice of small-sized machines suitable for installation under a sink is small. Here are some automatic washing machines available for sale:
Candy Aquamatic 1D835-07 is a Russian-assembled washing machine from a famous Italian brand.The depth of the machine is 46 cm, height 70 cm - this is optimal for installation in the bathroom. The machine is designed to wash 3.5 kg of dry laundry and spin at 800 rpm. You can wash clothes made from different fabrics, because the machine has 16 washing programs. The price for this washing machine is about $170.
Zanussi FCS1020C is an Italian-made washing machine with a load of only 3 kg. Its depth is 52 cm and its height is 57 cm. The laundry is spun at a speed of 1000 revolutions. The washing machine is small, and the price is impressive: about $340.
ELECTROLUX EWC 1350 is a Polish-assembled washing machine with a load of 3 kg of dry laundry and a spin speed of 1300 rpm. Height 57 cm, depth 52 cm. There are 15 washing modes, this is enough to efficiently wash different things and linen. The machine has intelligent control and costs about $360.
Eurosoba 1100 sprint is perhaps the most expensive small-sized washing machine, made in Switzerland. Loading as with previous machines is only 3 kg, spinning 1100 rpm. There is no protection against leaks, which makes you think about buying it at a cost of $510.
Note! Small-sized washing machines are quite expensive, mostly European-assembled machines.
Which sink to choose
To combine a sink with a washing machine in the bathroom, you need to choose the right sink. An ordinary sink with a low bottom is not suitable for such a purpose, either from a technical or aesthetic point of view. It is necessary to choose a “water lily” sink, the maximum height of which is 20 cm. The drain in such sinks can be horizontal or vertical; the optimal option would be one where the drain does not touch the equipment, because your safety depends on it. This is a horizontal drain located closer to the wall.
For your information! Water lily sinks have a special siphon that will be located behind the back wall of the washing machine.
“Water lilies” come in two types: light and uni. Unlike the Uni sink, the “water lily” light does not have a hole for the mixer and has a more elegant shape. A special type of sinks is light luxury, they differ in quality and appearance, and accordingly their price is an order of magnitude higher.
The shape of the sink above the washing machine is:
- square;
- rectangular;
- with rounded corners;
- round;
- oval.
Particularly popular are “water lily” sinks combined with a tabletop on which you can arrange various little things.
Pros and cons of this installation
When installing a washing machine under the sink, you need to carefully weigh all the pros and cons. It must be said that there are not so many advantages in such an installation:
- firstly, such placement saves space;
- secondly, it gives the bathroom a modern look, many consider it stylish and attractive, although this is subjective.
There are many disadvantages, they are worth paying attention to:
- You can’t wash bulky items in a small machine: down jackets, blankets, rugs;
- Most small machines have wash quality B;
- water lily sinks with a horizontal drain are more likely to become clogged;
- when washing, there is a risk of water getting on the washing machine, or rather on the control board, which can lead to equipment breakdown;
- installing a washing machine 50 cm deep may cause inconvenience when washing;
- When installing, you will need a special siphon, which will have to be purchased separately, and it is not so easy to find.
If there is no place for a washing machine anywhere except under the bathroom sink, then take this issue seriously.Think through everything down to the smallest detail, so that later you don’t experience any inconvenience when using both the sink and the machine itself.
I like my Indesit machine. It is very compact and pleasant to use.
