Salt Finish for Dishwasher
There are a lot of dishwashing detergents in the dishwasher, as well as dishwasher care products. One of the most advertised brands of such products is Finish. Many machine manufacturers (Bosch, AEG, Candy, Indesit, Electrolux, etc.) advise using products of this brand by sticking the Finish logo on dishwashers. In this article we will talk about one of their products - salt, and answer the questions: what is it for, what it is, how to use it, what users say about it.
Description and purpose of salt
Salt under the Finish brand is intended for use in a dishwasher to soften water and prevent scale formation on internal elements. This will not only extend the life of the unit, but also improve the quality of washing dishes. After all, as you know, in soft water it not only washes better, but also washes away. Salt itself will not soften the water; it works in interaction with the resin of the ion exchanger built into the machine.
In the absence of salt and prolonged use of the dishwasher, the ion exchanger may simply fail, blocking the operation of the entire machine. Therefore, when the salt indicator on the control panel lights up, be sure to pour salt into the salt compartment, especially if the water is very hard. And the harder the water in your region, the greater the salt consumption.
Important! Some people replace salt with tablets containing salt, but if the water is very hard, this should not be done, or add salt along with the tablets to maintain the operation of the ion exchanger.
The manufacturer of Finish salt claims the following functions of the salt:
- improving the performance of the dishwasher;
- water softening and scale prevention;
- eliminating water stains and deposits on dried dishes.
Finish salt contains sodium chloride. Some will say that this is ordinary table salt, which is sold under a well-promoted name. Yes, table salt also consists of sodium chloride, but salt Finish for dishwashers undergoes better processing, therefore it does not contain technical impurities, for example, carbonic acid salts, iron impurities, grains of sand, etc. In addition, the special salt has larger granules that dissolve more slowly and evenly in water.
Types of salt
Special Finish salt does not have any types, and what varieties can there be if it consists of only one component. However, the user encounters different boxes and names on the shelves. Indeed, salt for dishwashers is packaged in different packages, but this does not change its composition and properties. You can find a special Finish salt, Finish Calgonit salt.
Salt packages are available in 1.2 kg, 1.5 kg and 4 kg. Products under this brand are manufactured in different countries. In particular, salt is produced in Russia, Germany, and Poland. Russian-made salt is offered on the domestic market. The packaging of this salt is distinguished by the presence of inscriptions in Russian and packaging in 1.5 kg. Special salt made in Germany is usually packaged in 1.2 kg and 4 kg packs; there is no Russian text on the packs of such salt.
The price of salt from a European manufacturer will naturally be higher, but it is also very difficult to obtain such salt.
As for the quality of salt, this can only be said after using salt from different manufacturers. We asked what dishwasher users think about Finish salt.

I use Calgonit Finish salt.Washing with salt makes the dishes shine and leaves no residue on them. A one and a half kilogram pack fits completely into the salt compartment and lasts for about 3-4 months. When the light on the dishwasher panel lights up, I add salt again. For me, this is the ideal salt option; I don’t want to use anything else.

As for Finish salt, I can say that it is a good option. The first time I filled half a pack, which lasted me almost two months. When the indicator lights up, I add salt again. But sometimes the indicator may light up, but there is still salt in the compartment. In this case, I just stir it, and then the indicator no longer lights up. This salt, in my opinion, is very expensive. There are cheaper analogues, so I will look for the best option in terms of price and quality.

I expected more from such an advertised salt, that’s why I bought it, thinking that it was expensive and therefore of high quality. As written in the instructions, I poured salt into the compartment, but the indicator on the control panel was constantly blinking. At first I thought that the salt was poorly dissolved and there was no required concentration. But the pack of salt is already running low, and the indicator was blinking all the time. The salt itself seemed a little large to me, in short, I didn’t like it. I'll look for another one.

For my dishwasher, I occasionally buy 3-in-1 tablets, which, according to the manufacturers, do not require salt. So I stopped pouring salt into the fire pit. But after several washes I discovered stains and deposits on glass plates and glasses. It was not immediately clear why this happened. And when I added salt again, the stain on the dishes disappeared. In general, the saving experiment was a failure. Now I will again use Finish salt, which I have been using for many years, I am satisfied with both the price and the quality of washing dishes.Yes, and it lasts for a long time.
So, whether or not to buy dishwasher salt, think for yourself. You can at all replace salt analogue, but just don’t forget that in the event of a breakdown, the warranty on the machine when using non-special salt does not apply. Washing machine repairs will be carried out only at your expense. As for Finish salt, there are both supporters and opponents of its use. Try it yourself, and then decide whether it suits you or not.
