How to remove the bearing from the drum of an Ariston washing machine?
Having noticed that the machine began to knock and creak heavily during operation, it makes sense to check the bearing assembly. If you do not repair the machine in time, the noise will intensify, and, in the end, the washing machine will fail. There is no point in waiting for the noise to stop on its own. It is important to take action to correct the problem. Let's look at how to remove the bearing from the drum of an Ariston washing machine. Is it possible to do this work at home?
How to remove the tank?
The process of dismantling bearings is very labor-intensive. To get to the unit, you will have to almost completely disassemble the washing machine. You can cope with the task yourself, without resorting to the help of a specialist. The main thing is to strictly follow the recommendations and instructions.
The first stage of work is to remove the tank. The algorithm of actions will be as follows:
- de-energize the SMA;
- disconnect equipment from house utilities;
- move the machine to have access to the back of the case;
- Unscrew the bolts securing the back wall and move it to the side;
- remove the drive belt;
Take a photo of the diagram for connecting the sensors and wiring to the washing machine tank, heating element, this will help you avoid mistakes when reassembling the equipment.
- disconnect the sensors from the tank. To do this, pry off the rubber bands with a slotted screwdriver and reset each group of wires;
- remove the ground from the shaft by first loosening the nut at its base;
- disconnect the wiring supplying the heating element;
- remove the heating element from the housing. To do this, loosen and push the bolt securing it inward;
- unscrew the two screws from the top and lift the front panel up, while being at the back;
- using a 13mm socket, remove the metal plate holding the tank together;
- fix the flywheel with a screwdriver, unscrew the central nut and remove it;
- remove all the bolts located at the middle joint of the tank;
- grab the tank and pull it out.
This method is convenient because there is no need remove counterweights, engine, dampers, powder receiver and other components of the SMA. It is the drum with one half of the tank that is removed - this significantly simplifies the repair. Afterwards, you can begin to dismantle the bearings and seals and then replace them.
Getting rid of old bearings
When you have the removed tank in front of you, you should evaluate the condition of the shaft. A lot of scale “sticks” to the casing and rust forms. The surface should be treated with WD-40 universal aerosol cleaner. While the composition will act, corroding plaque, you need to prepare a special design. A brick base is placed under the tank, and a pillow is placed between them. This is necessary to simplify subsequent work.
Further algorithm of actions:
- tap the shaft. For this you will need a rubber mallet and a hammer. It is necessary that the drum falls inside;
- knock out the first, outer bearing. If it is strongly stuck to the surface, you can use a special chisel and hammer to knock it out;
- remove the oil seal;
- Proceed to remove the inner bearing. If it cannot be removed, make neat cuts with a grinder on both sides and unscrew the ring with a gas wrench;
- remove the second oil seal.
The dismantling process is completed. Next, you need to prepare the seat - clean it of dirt, plaque, and metal shavings. The entire surface of the drum and tank is also wiped with a cleaner and a rag. Then everything is wiped dry.
Let's install a new bearing
The last stage is installing a new unit and reassembling the washing machine. When purchasing replacement bearings and seals, make sure that they are suitable specifically for your SMA Hotpoint Ariston model. The algorithm for installing the rings will be as follows:
- take a bearing that is smaller in diameter, place the tank with the hole under the drum facing up, and install the part in the seat;
- ensure complete shrinkage of the ring. To do this, tap it with the blunt base of a chisel;
- lubricate the oil seal with a special compound and place it on the bearing;
- turn the tank over;
- install the second bearing in a similar way: place it in the hole and “tamp” it with a chisel;
- generously lubricate the shaft and secure the drum in the tank.
It is advisable to “walk” over the bearing assembly with moisture-resistant silicone sealant.
Next, the washing machine is assembled in reverse order. The tank is put in place, the halves are bolted together along a circular joint. After connecting the parts of the container, it is important to check that the structure rotates without problems. If there is no noise or squeaking during rotation, the replacement has been completed successfully.
Then the pulley is fixed, the tension plate is put in place, the heating element is mounted back, and the removed wires and sensors are connected. At the “finish”, the engine is attached, the drive belt is tightened, and both covers are screwed on. It is necessary to test the operation of the machine by washing “idle”.
