Whirlpool washing machine does not drain water
The situation when a Whirlpool washing machine “freezes” with a full tank and cannot drain the water is quite unpleasant. The cycle ends prematurely, leaving things “locked” inside the machine. The user will have to not only understand why the failure occurred, but also gain access to the laundry. Let’s figure out how to empty the “home assistant” and where to start the diagnosis.
Looking for a problem
If the automatic machine does not drain the water, you will have to find out what caused the malfunction of the equipment. The reasons may be different, from a clogged sewer pipe or garbage filter to a breakdown of the control module. To quickly identify the problem, try to remember at what stage of the cycle the washing machine froze.
Modern Whirlpool automatic machines can help you find the problem. After starting the self-diagnostic system, the intelligence will check each node and display a fault code on the screen. You can decipher the error using the instructions for the equipment.
Thanks to the self-diagnosis system, modern Whirlpool automatic machines are able to independently identify the problem.
Let us tell you what could be the cause of a non-functioning drain.
- External blockage. In this case, we are talking about a clogged sewer pipe or siphon.
- Internal blockage. Foreign objects that get into a Whirlpool washing machine can clog the drain pipe, the garbage filter, and get into the pump.
- Failed drain pump. A characteristic hum will indicate a malfunction of this kind. The issue could be either a pump failure or a blockage. Often it is the impeller that is blocked, and therefore draining becomes impossible.
- Damage to the main control module.Modern washing machines are very sensitive to voltage changes in the network. A strong “jump” can lead to failure of the electronic module. In this case, the “brain” will not be able to command the pump to start pumping out water.
- Drain hose is too long. Whirlpool automatic washing machines have a standard pump. Its power is designed for a specific corrugation length - up to one and a half meters. If you connect a 2-3 meter hose to the machine, the pump simply will not cope with the load and will not be able to pump water out of the tank.
If the machine does not drain water, check whether the No Spin function has been activated. Perhaps you started a delicate program, so the washer stopped with a full tank of wet laundry. Then just select the desired mode and wait until the “home assistant” completes it.
Before starting the diagnosis, the Whirlpool washing machine must be emptied. We'll tell you how to drain the water from the tank yourself and remove the laundry.
Removing accumulated water
Before performing diagnostics, you need to empty the machine. If the automatic drain does not work, you should remove the water from the tank yourself. This can be done either through the drain hose or by unscrewing the garbage filter.
Many Whirlpool automatic machines do not have check valves, so you can remove water from the drum by lowering the drain hose below the level of the tank. With this position of the sleeve, the liquid will begin to flow away by gravity. The main thing is not to forget to place a basin under the stream.
Some Whirlpool models have a special hose for emergency water drainage, the pipe is located next to the garbage filter.
If the drainage is carried out through a “trash bin”, the algorithm of actions is as follows:
- de-energize the SMA;
- close the shut-off valve that controls the flow of water into the washing machine;
- prepare a low basin to collect liquid;
- cover the floor near the washing machine with dry rags;
- open the technical hatch;
- place a basin under the washing machine, at the location of the drain filter;
- unscrew the “trash can” from left to right;
- take out the cork;
- wait until the water drains into the basin.
If you unscrew the garbage filter and the water still does not flow out, it means that the drain pipe leading from the tank to the pump is clogged. Move the hose, liquid may begin to appear. If not, you will have to disconnect the tube and wash it under running warm water.
Algorithm for troubleshooting
After draining the water, you can begin diagnosing your Whirlpool washing machine. Make sure that the machine is de-energized and disconnected from the water supply. First of all, the elements of the drainage system are inspected.
We will tell you in what order it is recommended to check the elements of the drain system.
- Garbage filter and its seat. Unscrew the plug, wash the filter element, and clean the dirt from the hole.
- The pipe connecting the tank and the pump. Feel the hose with your hands, if you find a blockage, unhook the tube and rinse under running water. Then the element returns to its original place.
- Drain pump. You can check the movement of the impeller through the hole formed after removing the debris filter. If hair and threads are wrapped around the blades, be sure to remove the debris.
A superficial inspection of the pump is not enough. Experts recommend additionally checking it as follows - launch the “Spin” option and observe the operation of the element. If the washer starts to hum, but the impeller does not start spinning, it means the pump has failed.
Typically, drainage on automatic Whirlpool machines does not work due to clogging of the drainage system elements: filter, pipe or pump.
Sometimes you can observe that the machine works in the “Spin” mode, but not in the “Drain” program. Old Whirlpool washing machines suffer from this problem. The mechanism of the machine weakens and cannot provide the necessary magnetic field. So the pump loses power and cannot withstand the load, so the water does not drain.
Broken pump
If the washing machine starts to hum when it starts to drain, but the water still does not leave the system, most likely the problem is with the pump. You can check if the pump is faulty using a multimeter. Use a tester to measure the resistance between the contacts of the part and compare the resulting value with the standard value.
It is not practical to repair the part. If the drain does not function due to a broken pump, the pump will need to be replaced. Installing a new element is very simple; even a beginner can do this job. Follow these steps:
- turn off the power to the automatic machine;
- disconnect the washing machine from the water supply;
- lay a blanket on the floor;
- lay the Whirlpool washing machine on its left side (it is important not to place the machine on the right wall, otherwise you may flood the control board with water accumulated in the dispenser);
- remove the pallet (if there is one);
- find the pump;
- unscrew the screws securing the pump;
- remove the wiring, remembering the contact connection diagram;
- remove the old pump from the housing;
- install the new pump by inserting it into the grooves;
- reconnect the wires;
- secure the pump with bolts.
When buying a new drain pump, you need to focus on the model and serial number of the Whirlpool machine. Even better is to dismantle the old pump and bring it to the store as a sample. Then you can accurately select a replacement part.
After installing the new pump, you need to lift the machine, connect it to water and electricity, and start a test cycle.If the drainage does not work out, you will have to contact a service center. The cause is probably a damaged control module. Repairing the electronic unit of a Whirlpool washing machine yourself is risky; you will need the help of a specialist in this matter.
