What to do if the washing machine stops running out of water?
What to do if the washing machine has stopped running with water and does not want to continue running the program? First, you need to turn off the “home assistant” from the button, then unplug the power cord from the outlet. The machine should remain de-energized for 20-30 minutes, then you can try to activate it again and start the washing mode. In half the cases, this procedure helps, but if there is no result, you will have to find out the cause of the malfunction.
What happened to the technology?
Usually, if an automatic machine freezes in the middle of a cycle and does not want to work, after 5-10 minutes an error appears on its screen. By deciphering the fault code, you can narrow down the range of possible problems. Washing machines without a display indicate a breakdown by flickering LEDs on the dashboard.
When the machine simply refuses to function and does not display an error, you have to identify the problem yourself, “cutting off” possible causes. Typically, SMA freezing is caused by:
- overload or imbalance of the drum (this is why it is so important not to exceed the maximum permissible load weight and evenly distribute the laundry in the machine);
- activation of the leakage protection sensor;
- clogging of the filter element, drain hose or pipe;
- depressurization of the system (in case of accidental unlocking of the hatch);
- incorrectly selected washing mode (the reason is typical for the newest and smartest models that can determine the type of fabric loaded into the drum);
- failure of the main electronic module;
- problems with the wiring (this may be damage to the wires, loose terminals and sensors);
- breakdown of individual components and parts (motor, heating element, drain pump, etc.).
In addition to all this, if the washer fills with water and stops, there may be problems with the inlet solenoid valve. When the drain system is clogged, the machine simply will not be able to remove the liquid and start rinsing, so it will remain stuck with a full tank. Let’s figure out what to do to get the “home assistant” back on track.
Lots of laundry or clog
Quite often, modern automatic machines freeze due to the fact that things are loaded into the drum incorrectly. It’s not always a matter of exceeding the maximum permissible weight; sometimes the problem lies in:
- improper placement of clothes in the machine (when things bunch up and cause imbalance);
- unsorted laundry (ultra-modern machines that can detect the type of fabric and select the appropriate program will not start washing cotton and wool thrown into the drum at the same time).
Before you start using your new machine, be sure to read the user manual. The instructions specify the maximum amount of laundry that can be placed in the drum when selecting certain programs. For example, when starting a quick cycle, only half loading is allowed, etc. When the washing machine is equipped with an auto-weighing sensor, if it is overloaded, the washing will not start at all.
If you are allowed to put 6 kg of clothes into the machine, and 7 kg of laundry is packed inside, it is likely that the washing machine will not be able to cope with the increased load and will freeze.
The SMA may become stuck with a full tank of water if the clothes are not loaded evenly. A good example is if you put a duvet cover and a couple of T-shirts in the machine. Small things will get clogged into it, forming a dense lump.Twisted products will interfere with the centrifugal force generated when the “centrifuge” rotates. Intelligence will detect the imbalance of the drum, the protection system will work and the program will stop. Freezing equipment can cause a common blockage. Garbage accumulates in the following places:
- drain corrugation;
- pump;
- sewer riser;
- drain filter;
- various pipes, etc.
You should start diagnosing a washing machine from simple to complex. First you should check the drain filter. It is located in the front, in the lower right corner. The “trash bin” is hidden behind a small technical hatch or false panel. Before unscrewing the filter, cover the floor around the machine with rags and drain the water using an emergency hose. It is also located below, next to the “trash bin”. After emptying the washer, remove the filter element, rinse it in warm water, and wipe the walls of the hole with a damp cloth. Inside you can find lumps of hair, threads, lint - all the rubbish must be pulled out of the machine.
When the cause is a clogged sewer riser, water will become difficult to drain not only from the machine, but also from the plumbing. You can clean the pipe with household chemicals, for example, “Mole” or “Tyrret”. If special formulations do not help, you will need the help of a specialist.
If the washing machine fills with water, quietly completes the main wash, but is stuck in the rinse cycle, feel the drain hose. The hose is detached from the washing machine, disconnected from the siphon and washed under water pressure. If there is a blockage inside, you can remove it with a long metal wire.
Also, the machine may freeze with a full tank of water if the pump is clogged. The pump simply will not pump out the waste liquid and discharge it into the sewer, so the cycle will be interrupted.It is difficult to clean an element without having information about the structure of the part, so it is better to entrust the work to a specialist.
The engine, drain pump or heating element are to blame
What to do if the reason for the machine freezing is not a blockage? Then you will have to check the main components of the device. The SMA may stop during operation due to a burnt-out pump, faulty heating element or damaged motor. When any important element breaks down, the unit simply stops functioning and notifies the user of the error.
If the automatic machine displays an incomprehensible code on the display, look at the instructions for the washing machine. The book contains a description of each error. Having identified the cause of the equipment freezing, the further course of repair work is determined.
If the washing machine indicates problems with the motor, you should be prepared that repairing or replacing the motor is quite expensive. In some cases, repairing an old “home assistant” is much more expensive than purchasing a new machine.
When the washing machine reports problems with the heating element, you can fix the machine yourself. It is necessary to purchase a similar heater suitable for a specific machine and install it in place of the old element. During the work, you will have to remove the cover and back wall of the housing, disconnect all wiring from the part and loosen the fastening nut.
It is impractical to repair a burnt-out drain pump; it is necessary to purchase and install a new pump.
Changing a pump is sometimes more difficult than replacing a heating element. You will have to pull out the drain filter, remove any remaining water from the system, lay the washing machine on its side and disconnect all the pipes and wires from the pump through the bottom. Next, the fixing screws are removed and the part is removed from the housing. Installing a new element is carried out in the reverse order.
There can be many reasons why the washer flooded with water and froze at some stage of the cycle. Usually the machine helps the user and displays a fault code, narrowing the range of possible breakdowns. When the diagnostic system does not notice a failure, you will have to look for the problem yourself, moving from simple to complex.
