Is it worth risking your favorite pants?
Faux leather trousers are in the wardrobe of almost every fashionista. You can wear such a versatile item to work, for a walk, or to a party. After purchasing, it is better to immediately figure out how to wash leatherette pants so as not to spoil them. The label contains the manufacturer's basic recommendations for caring for the product.
It is not recommended to get faux leather clothes wet, so you will have to give up the idea of washing your trousers in an automatic washing machine.
If you wash leatherette pants in an automatic washing machine, they can easily be damaged. Even after setting the delicate program and refusing the spin cycle. When completely wet, artificial leather is easily deformed - microcracks and creases appear on its surface. Even if your favorite pants “survive their acquaintance” with the washing machine, their appearance will noticeably suffer. Therefore, it is recommended to wash leatherette trousers manually, without completely soaking the product, but by spot-treating the contaminated areas.
If your trousers are heavily soiled, it is better to abandon the automatic washing machine and clean your faux leather trousers using the watering method. This is a gentle way to deal with numerous stains. The algorithm of actions will be as follows:
- hang your pants over the bathtub using special hangers with clothespins;
- fill a basin with cool water and dissolve detergent in it (washing gel, liquid soap, etc.);
- wet the contaminated area of the trousers with a shower;
- prepare a soft sponge, dip it in soapy water;
- Sponge the contaminated areas;
- leave the pants “soaped” for 10-20 minutes;
- shower your pants, washing off dirt and foam.
There are even more gentle methods for cleaning leatherette items. Therefore, if the contamination is not serious, it is better to avoid showering your pants. We will tell you which methods are preferable when caring for faux leather clothing.
Cleaning pants using gentle methods
Prolonged contact with water can be detrimental to artificial leather. Therefore, when washing, you should try to wet your pants as little as possible. Fortunately, there are several practically “dry” methods for cleaning leatherette products.
- Exposure to steam. If you have a steamer at home, it’s good, you can use it to treat your pants, and after the material “softens,” clean off the dirt with a damp cloth or sponge. If you don't have a household appliance, boil a pot of water and hold your pants over it for 5-10 minutes. Then also wipe the contaminated areas with a cloth.
- Vinegar solution. An excellent anti-pollution product. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar essence to a liter of water. Use the resulting liquid to treat stains on the leatherette.
- Soap solution. Fill a basin with cool water and dilute washing gel in it. Dampen a cloth and gently wipe the dirty areas on your pants.
If it is not possible to deal with contaminants using these methods, you can use ammonia. Before treating stains, it is recommended to moisten an inconspicuous area of the trousers with ammonia.If the fabric does not change color, the product can be used for cleaning.
How to get rid of folds and creases?
Even after the most careful washing, creases may remain on faux leather items. Ironing leatherette clothes is prohibited - high temperature exposure is detrimental to the material. How to get rid of wrinkles?
The best way to remove creases from leatherette pants is to use a steamer.
Sometimes the creases are so strong that the steamer cannot cope with them. You can straighten faux leather trousers with glycerin. To do this you need:
- buy a bottle of glycerin at the pharmacy;
- hang your pants on special hangers with clothespins;
- soak a cotton pad in glycerin and apply it to the creases;
- wait half an hour;
- treat the pants with a steamer in places lubricated with glycerin;
- leave the trousers on the hanger for 2-3 hours;
- re-steam the product.
The point of the method is for the leatherette to soften as much as possible and straighten under its own weight. You cannot stretch your pants trying to straighten out the creases - this will lead to deformation of the product. It is important to act strictly according to the instructions given.
