Disassembling the washing machine drain pump

Disassembling the washing machine drain pumpIf the automatic machine, while draining, suddenly freezes or stops functioning altogether, you will have to check the pump. Externally, the pump may look “as good as new,” but a huge amount of dirt and debris accumulates inside the part, which prevents its normal operation. We'll tell you how to remove the unit from the case and disassemble it.

Dismantling and removing pump parts

To disassemble the drain pump of the washing machine and clean it, it is not necessary to resort to the help of a specialist. The work will not take much time, and it is not difficult to cope with if you follow the recommendations. The pump for all machines is located in the lower part of the body, under the tank. You can usually access it through the bottom of the washer. The algorithm for disassembling the drain pump will be as follows:

  • disconnect the washing machine from the power supply;
  • close the valve responsible for the water supply;
  • unhook the drain and inlet hoses from the body;
  • find the garbage filter. Depending on the model, the SMA may be hidden by a lower decorative panel or a small hatch;Where is the filter located in the washing machine?
  • cover the floor around the washing machine with unnecessary rags, place a low basin under the bottom, in the area where the garbage filter is located;
  • unscrew the drain filter plug, make sure that the liquid flows from the hole into the container;we get to the pump through the bottom of the machine
  • carefully place the front camera on the left side;

You cannot place the washing machine on its right side - water accumulated in the pipes can flood the control board.

  • if there is a tray under the machine, unscrew the fixing bolts and remove it;
  • Unscrew the screws securing the pump to the housing;unscrew the pump from the snail
  • take a photograph of the wiring connection diagram to the element, then disconnect the contacts and pipes;
  • Turn the pump from right to left, “sink” it a little into the housing and remove the part out.

Next, you need to dismantle the impeller; without this, you won’t be able to disassemble the pump. Proceed like this:

  • pry the impeller latches and remove it. If the cross does not release, blow hot air (hair dryer) on the shank and try again;
  • Having taken out the magnet with the impeller, clean them from dirt;
  • remove the electromagnet from the shaft. Now you can see the bearing.

Inspect the bearing; if it is severely damaged and cannot be repaired, replace the element.

After cleaning the inside of the pump with your own hands, reassemble the housing in reverse order. Next, the pump is placed in its original place, the wiring and pipes are connected to it. To avoid mistakes when connecting contacts, refer to the photo you took. Be sure to run a test cycle and watch the machine work.

How to ring a coil?

If no defects in the pump are visually detected, you will have to check it with a special device. To diagnose the pump, you will need a multimeter - it is sold in specialized stores and costs about $3-6. Using a tester, you can ring the element coil. The algorithm of actions is as follows:let's ring the pump coil

  • switch the multimeter to voltmeter mode;
  • lean the probes of the device against the coil contacts;
  • evaluate the values on the tester display.

If the multimeter screen displays 0 or 1, you will have to change the pump. It is not practical to repair the part; it is better to buy and install a new unit. When a three-digit number is displayed, the problem may not be a burnt-out pump motor, but the control board of the washing machine. For a more accurate diagnosis, you will have to call a specialist.

We will extend the service life of the part

Manufacturers of washing equipment voice a fairly long standard operating life of the drain pump - 8-10 years. Whether the element will last that long depends largely on the user. To ensure that the unit does not fail earlier, it is important to provide the automatic machine with proper care. Usually the pump fails prematurely due to:

  • penetration of foreign objects into the drain system;
  • loading too dirty and dusty laundry into the drum;
  • getting inside paper clips, keys, paper, bolts, matches and other items forgotten in the pockets of things.

In order for the water pump of an automatic machine to last as long as possible, you must follow the basic rules:

  • shake out things before washing, make sure there is nothing left in your pockets;
  • pre-soak laundry with pieces of dirt in a basin and only then load it into the drum;
  • place a filter in front of the machine’s inlet hose for additional purification of tap water;
  • periodically use various means to prevent scale formation;
  • Make sure that there is no water left in the tank after washing.

If you have even the slightest doubt about the operation of the drain pump, it is better to immediately disassemble the part, clean it and test it with a multimeter.

In fact, disassembling the pump with your own hands is quite simple. If you follow the instructions, you can complete the job in literally an hour. To prevent clogging of the pump, it is necessary to clean the debris filter every three months and remove wound hair and threads from the impeller blades.
