The dishwasher hums but doesn't work
Despite the high reliability of modern household appliances, no one is immune from a sudden breakdown of a dishwasher. For example, a very common unpleasant situation is when the dishwasher hums but does not work. In this state, the equipment turns on, so it seems that nothing bad has happened to the device, but it is impossible to fully use its functions. Why this happens and what to do in such a situation – we’ll tell you in today’s material.
What exactly is buzzing?
First of all, you need to understand which part of the device is causing the unpleasant hum, and also why the “home assistant” stopped washing the dishes. To determine the reasons, you need to explore a number of possible options that you will have to deal with yourself or with the help of a wizard.
If you are not mentally prepared to disassemble household appliances and study their internal components, and are also afraid of accidentally damaging the parts more than they are already damaged, then it is better to immediately call a specialist for diagnostics and subsequent repairs.
There are two sources of hum - the circulation pump and the pump. However, the pump does not turn on at the initial stage, but only works at the end of the operating cycle, when you need to remove water from the dishwasher, so it is better to go straight to the pump. When the circulation pump hums, it means that it is trying to start working, but for some reason it does not work. This may occur due to the fact that either water does not enter the system, or a mechanical part, say, an impeller, is broken. The second happens less often, so first let’s focus on the first possible cause of the malfunction.
Water does not flow into the dishwasher
The most basic solution to the problem may be a situation where there is no water in the water supply. However, if everything is in order with the water supply, then it is worth exploring options when the inlet valve is broken or the mesh in front of the valve is clogged. What to do in this case?
- Shut off the water supply so that liquid stops flowing into the dishwasher.
If your hose has an additional flow filter installed, you should also remove and clean it of dirt.
- Remove the inlet hose, remove the standard flow filter located at the entrance to the PMM and rinse it under a powerful stream of hot water, thus removing water stone and other dirt.
Just two points can eliminate most problems with water intake, as well as with the machine’s refusal to start working. But if these instructions did not help you, then you should further study the filling valve, for which you must first remove the bottom panel of the machine, and then find the valve on the front left of the device. Disconnect the wires from the two valve terminals, take a standard multimeter with ohmmeter mode and check the resistance of the element. If the data differs from the norm, then the part is faulty and requires replacement.
Let's check the circulation pump
When everything is fine with the water supply, then most likely the pump itself, which is responsible for circulating water inside the dishwasher, is to blame. To carry out diagnostics and repairs, you will have to partially disassemble the device.
- Disconnect the unit from all communications.
- Move the machine to a spacious room where it will be convenient to disassemble it.
- Place household appliances on the floor.
- Remove the bottom of the “home assistant”.
- Remove and temporarily place the drip tray out of the way.
- Do the same with the inlet pipe.
- Remove the circulation pump by disconnecting the wires and unfastening the clips.
To be on the safe side, take photographs of the wiring so that you can see an example of the connection later.
If an element is damaged, it is much easier to buy a new one and install it in place of the old one. However, repairing this part is not very difficult, so if you wish, you can repair the pump yourself and save a little.
Repair of circulation pump PMM
It is important to understand that if the unit is damaged due to a power surge or winding short circuit, then the circulation pump cannot be repaired. But if a damaged impeller or worn bushings are to blame, then the part can be easily restored.
The most common cause of malfunction is wear of the graphite bushings. To determine this, it is enough to check during disassembly of the pump whether there is any play. To repair the item, follow the instructions.
- Remove the pump and disassemble it by unscrewing the nozzle on the rotor.
- Carefully remove the fragile impeller from the shaft, being careful not to crack it.
Graphite bushings and an impeller can be purchased at any hardware store, ordered from an online store, or printed on a 3D printer yourself.
- Install new parts.
Now all that remains is to assemble the pump and install it in place. And to ensure that the parts ordered online fit your dishwasher exactly, always accurately indicate the serial number and model of the PMM.
