Washing poplin bed linen in a washing machine
Poplin has long established itself as a soft, smooth and durable material that perfectly retains its shape and color. Also, poplin fabric retains heat well, does not cause allergic reactions and is quite easy to care for, which allows you to sew popular bed linen from it. The sets are inexpensive and provide a comfortable and complete rest. Housewives are pleased that poplin bed linen can be washed in a washing machine. We invite you to find out step-by-step instructions with an analysis of detergents and storage tips.
Automatic wash
Machine washing poplin is not dangerous, the main thing is to comply with several important conditions. The first is a correctly selected mode, which should carefully clean the silk and wool threads present in the fabric. Ideally, a delicate or manual program is turned on, “Silk”, “Wool” and “Cotton” are also allowed.
Having set the program, we adjust some parameters of the cycle:
- temperature - 30 degrees if the composition contains synthetics, wool or silk, or 40 degrees for cotton fibers;
- spin intensity – up to 600 rpm, it is better to turn it off altogether;
- automatic drying – disable;
- detergents - gels for delicate fabrics with the addition of conditioner.
Poplin can be washed on the “Silk”, “Wool” or “Delicate” cycle.
When washing in a washing machine, it is important to follow the loading rules. Thus, it is not recommended to load other types of fabrics into the drum at the same time as poplin laundry. Polyester and other “stiff” synthetics can damage delicate fibers. The tank is only half filled with poplin, since clothes need “air” for optimal washing and rinsing.
What are we going to wash with?
When washing poplin in a machine, special attention should be paid to detergents. Powders can be added, but rarely and only if they do not contain abrasive components, bleaching particles and other aggressive additives. If colored laundry is washed, then purchase packages marked accordingly. Ideally, it is better to abandon powder mixtures and give preference to gels.
Unlike powders, gels can “work” in cold water, dissolve quickly, remove dirt perfectly and are completely rinsed out of the fibers. Also, liquid forms do not cause allergic reactions and have a safe composition.
The range of delicate gels is wide; the following brands have especially proven themselves for colored fabrics:
- “Persil Universal Gel” is a budget option, which is valued for its effective cleansing while preserving the original color and softening the fabric (the special formula contains a cellulose enzyme that smoothes poplin fibers);
- “Beads Gel” - effectively washes poplin and other delicate materials without distorting the color of the product, is quickly washed out of the fabric and prevents yellowing of the fibers;
- “Lion TOP-strength” - perfect for cotton poplin, it will help linen retain its shape, enhance color and acquire a pleasant aroma.
Whitening detergents are used for light-colored sheets and duvet covers. An excellent option would be Persil Professional Universal, a chlorine-containing gel with universal action. The liquid is suitable for all types of fabric and removes heavy stains even in cold water.For stubborn stains, it is better to soak the laundry in a solution of oxygen bleach in a ratio of 2 tbsp. powder per 5 liters of water heated to 40 degrees. The procedure lasts about 60-100 minutes.
You can bleach poplin with folk remedies. A solution made from peroxide, vinegar, water and fresh lemon juice effectively fights dirt, yellowness and grayness. It is necessary to mix all the ingredients, pour the resulting liquid into a spray bottle and spray on the affected areas of the bedding. After 10 minutes, the laundry is rinsed and the result is assessed.
Poplin with wool and silk threads is bleached in a more gentle manner. In 5 liters of water heated to 20 degrees, add 50 m of delicate washing gel, and after it dissolves, add 3 tbsp. fine table salt and pour in 1 tsp. peroxide and ammonia. The laundry is dipped into the resulting solution and left in it for 3-4 hours. Afterwards the bedding is rinsed and sent to dry.
Traditional care
Washing poplin bedding by hand is difficult and troublesome, but it is quite possible to remove minor stains. It is necessary to fill a basin with warm water, dissolve the detergent and dip the laundry in the soapy solution. The fabric is thoroughly soaked and left to soak for twenty minutes. If the stains are old, the time increases to 30-60 minutes. The washing itself should be done carefully, without active friction and a hard brush.
It is forbidden to rub, twist or wring out the poplin too much!
Use cold water for rinsing. Ideally, you should rinse the laundry until the detergent is completely washed out. At the “finish”, rinse aid or conditioner is added. It is prohibited to squeeze or twist the poplin.
Dry and iron
Let us remind you that poplin does not like intensive spinning. Automatic drying is also prohibited - excessive heating will ruin the laundry and deform the fibers. You must act as carefully as possible.
- The rinsed fabrics are gently pressed, without twisting or squeezing.
- Shake and hang and clothesline.
- Choose a place for drying, protected from sunlight, in the fresh air.
Cotton poplin is ironed at 140 degrees, and silk, synthetic or wool - at 80.
If you do not wring out the poplin and dry it flat, then there will be no need for ironing. If there are creases or bruises, you can iron the bedding, but only from the inside out and onto a damp cloth. For cotton-based linen, the iron heats up to 140 degrees, and for items containing silk, synthetics or wool, the temperature is set to a maximum of 80.
Storage Tips
Poplin is stored, like any bedding, in a dry closet. It is advisable to fold the laundry in a neat pile, smoothing out all the folds and creases. To maintain freshness, a special flavor is placed nearby.
Ideally, bedding should be changed every day. This will not only help keep the room clean and fresh, but will also save the poplin from intensive washing. The laundry will not get very dirty, so a gentle, quick cycle will suffice. Poplin underwear is considered noble, as it provides a warm, comfortable and safe sleep. The main thing is to wash it correctly so as not to lose all the benefits of poplin.
