Will a dryer ruin things?
Dryers have not yet become as widespread in homes as washing machines, so there are still various rumors and myths about this type of household appliance. Just as people were once afraid of electricity, refrigerators, televisions and washing machines, now they often believe that dryers only cause harm. Allegedly, the laundry in the device’s drum dries so quickly at extreme temperatures that the fabric fibers lose their elasticity, become deformed and break faster. Let us help you figure out whether the dryer is ruining your clothes.
Does the dryer harm laundry?
Let’s say right away that the fear that the machine will deform and damage things is wrong. The fact is that modern devices are created using heat pump technology, with the help of which drying is not carried out at such high temperatures as in the old-style equipment with ventilation and condensation types of drying. Thus, things are handled with care, taking care of the integrity of the most delicate and fragile fabrics. Modern household appliances also allow you to save clothes using the “Easy Ironing” function, with which you don’t even have to iron your clothes after drying, because they will be almost completely wrinkle-free.
For the most careful care, you need to buy equipment from the “Candy GrandÓ” series with a “Woolmark” certificate - it dries even wool as delicately as possible.
At the same time, the myth about the dangers of dryers appeared in the last century not without foundation, since at that time the equipment actually dried clothes very aggressively, which caused harm to the fabrics. But this is a thing of the past; today, even models without a heat pump dry clothes at a moderate pace and at an acceptable temperature. Therefore, at the moment, the fabric in the dryer can only be damaged if you load items from the prohibited list into the dryer.
Things that don't belong in the dryer
Unfortunately, not all household clothes can be dried in this convenient “home assistant”. To avoid accidentally ruining things, study the list of items not for the dryer compiled by equipment manufacturers.
- Rubber backed carpets. This type of product is considered dirt-proof, as it perfectly absorbs all moisture, which is why such rugs are often left in front of the front door. Usually they are not prohibited from being washed in the washing machine, but they are still not recommended to be placed in the dryer. This is due to the fact that the rubber base of the mat is not able to withstand the high temperature of the dryer with which it processes things. Because of this, the mat can melt, ruin other things, flood the inside of the dryer with rubber, and even cause a fire.
Never dry anything that has a rubber coating, such as running shoes with rubber soles.
- Wet wipes for the dryer. They are created from natural materials using various scents in order to remove foreign odors from clothes, leaving only a pleasant aroma. Their advantage is that they do not harm the environment, as they completely decompose in just three weeks. But organic residues can stick to the dryer filter, causing its efficiency to decrease - the quality of lint removal will decrease due to the sticky film adhering to the filter element grid. This also risks the formation of mold, as water will begin to accumulate in the machine.
- Used beach items. This type of clothing should not be washed because grains of sand from swimsuits, swimming trunks, towels and other things will certainly get stuck in the dryer. Because of this, grains of sand will continue to fall on clean clothes that you load into the dryer for several months. In addition, sand can break the drum, which may even require expensive repairs. Therefore, if you need to dry your beachwear, first clean it of sand and wash it.
- Clothes covered in pet fur. Cat and dog lovers know very well how difficult it is to clean things from their pets' fur, but this is not a reason to dry things in this condition. In this case, the wool will not only end up on clean clothes, but will also clog up in the ventilation hole and lint trap. This will increase the drying time of things and also create a risk of equipment fire. It is recommended to first remove all fluffy hair using a sticky roller, and only then begin drying.
- Leather items. Clothes made from such delicate and expensive material can simply crack in the dryer due to high temperatures. If you don’t want your favorite things to deform, don’t put leather products, including artificial leather, or suede, in the machine.
- Silk and lace products. Most often, these delicate, weightless materials are used to create equally delicate clothing for the home, for example, underwear and pajamas. In high temperature conditions, such things will simply tear and become covered with folds that will remain on the clothing forever. If you need to dry these products, then you should use the old drying method - on a rope.
To summarize, we note that the dryer does not damage things if you purchase new models of “dryers” and strictly follow the manufacturers’ recommendations. Therefore, any ordinary things can and even should be dried in an automatic dryer, because it saves time and makes life easier.
