How to change a bearing in an Atlant washing machine
The need to repair your washing machine can arise completely unexpectedly. It doesn’t matter what brand the machine is, because any one can break down, including washing machines from the Belarusian company Atlant. Bearing failure is one of the most common failures. We will talk further about how to change them correctly with your own hands and what difficulties may arise.
How to understand that a bearing is faulty
You can make sure that it is the bearing that has broken by hearing a certain sound during operation of the washing machine; it is more like a knocking sound that intensifies during the spin cycle. In addition, if you try to rotate the empty drum by hand, you may feel some play. If there is one, then it is 100 percent – the bearings are broken and require replacement.
Replacing this part cannot be delayed, since the beating of the tank can lead to more serious damage, and you are guaranteed expensive repairs. Bearing replacement can be done with your own hands if the tank of the machine is collapsible.
For your information! Such repairs are not too complicated; it is enough to do everything according to the instructions and carefully.
Preparatory work
When planning to change bearings at home, you need to be well prepared. Choose a convenient place where you will carry out the repairs. It is necessary to provide access to the washing machine from all sides, having first disconnected it from the network, water supply and sewerage.
Then gather the tools you will need:
- 12-19 mm socket and wrenches;
- hex keys;
- hammer and blunt chisel;
- Phillips and straight screwdriver.
In addition to tools, also prepare:
- new bearings, preferably original ones, but Korean-made ones are also possible, they cost more, but the quality is better than Russian ones;
- stuffing box;
- special lubricant for bearings and seals;
- penetrating lubricant WD-40;
- dry, clean cloth.
We take out the tank with the drum
In the Atlant washing machine, as in many others, the tank is accessed through the top of the machine. The procedure will be as follows:
- take out the powder receptacle;
- remove the top cover;
- unscrew the front panel;
- unscrew and remove the counterweight;
- Having unscrewed the screws and disconnected the water supply hose, remove the compartment for the powder receiver;
- disconnect the pipes from the tank;
- remove the back cover of the machine;
- disconnect the hose from the tank and the wires from the heating element and the engine;
Important! To avoid mixing up the wires, you can mark them with a marker or take a photo. When assembling, you will be sure that everything is connected correctly.
- unscrew the shock absorbers;
- remove the control unit to the side;
- unscrew the drain hose and water supply valve;
- remove the cuff;
- Now, carefully grasping the springs, we remove the tank from the washing machine through the top.
We make a replacement
All that remains is to disassemble the tank and replace the bearings in the drum. We do the following:
- carefully unscrew the counterweight and remove it;
- Unscrew the screws holding the front part of the tank;
- now turning the drum upside down, unscrew the central bolt and remove the pulley with the belt;
- pull out the drum with the bushing from the tank body;
- then, using a chisel or a wrench with a head and a hammer, first knock out the inner bearing, and then the outer one;
- When the bearings are removed from the seat, all dirt must be removed before installing new ones.To do this, apply WD-40 lubricant to the seat and then wipe it with a dry cloth;
- Now install new bearings by lightly tapping the outer race with a hammer, install the outer (it is smaller) and then the inner bearing;
- We install a seal on the inside of the tank; first, lubricant is applied to its inner surface, which prevents water from getting inside the bearing; the bearing itself already contains lubricant, so it does not need to be lubricated.
The bearings have been replaced, but before you assemble the washing machine and complete the repair, you can inspect other parts, perhaps something needs to be changed. For example, you can clean the heating element from scale. The process of assembling the components of a washing machine with your own hands is carried out in the reverse order.
So, replacing bearings in an Atlant washing machine can be complicated by disassembling the tank and knocking out the bearings. Often the pulley is screwed on very tightly, and this causes difficulties. However, this does not discourage you from carrying out repairs at home, since you can save money on work. Be prepared for difficulties, good luck!
