Why is the dishwasher humming?
If your dishwasher is making a humming sound when operating, don't ignore it. Most likely, such noise is a precursor to a breakdown, or the dishwasher has already broken down. In any case, you need to immediately begin searching for the causes of the noise and eliminating them. In this publication, we will talk in more or less detail about the reasons for the hum that a dishwasher can make, and how to eliminate this hum.
How to find the causes of noise
Before you get into the dishwasher, it's a good idea to learn how it works. How does a dishwasher work?, is well described in the article of the same name posted on our website, so we will not repeat it. We focus on the order of searching for the causes of the hum. The noise, of course, does not arise on its own; it is caused by some detail. However, the cause should be sought according to a strictly verified scheme.
A hum sometimes occurs due to water hammer or increased pressure in the water supply.
- The check begins with the most innocent, but most common reasons: accumulated debris and too high (low) pressure in the water supply. In the first case, you need to clean the machine, and in the second, increase the pressure using a pump. If it is too high, wait until it drops and the pressure switch begins to work adequately.
- Next you need to dismantle and inspect the circulation pump
- Then you need to remove and check the dishwasher pump.
Drive mechanism
So, let's open the dishwasher door and take out all the contents from the hopper, namely: dirty dishes and utensil holders. Next, remove the upper sprinkler and its drive elements, and then clean it all from dirt.Next, remove the lower sprinkler, sealing rings, and also unscrew the garbage filter. Special attention should be paid to these parts, since this is where debris gets clogged most often.
To prevent frequent dishwasher clogging in the future, you should clean dirty dishes before placing them in the wash hopper. Using a spoon or other handy object, clean the dishes from stuck pieces of food. These simple measures will help avoid many problems.
Circulation pump bearing
In about half of the cases, the reason for the humming of the dishwasher is the circulation pump. All because of the small support bearing, which is a ring made of graphite-based material. The support bearing wears out quite quickly. If the dishwasher is used every day, the bearing will wear out in about 2-3 years.
Interesting! The newer the dishwasher models, the worse the graphite support bearings are.
At first, the output does not affect the operation of the circulation pump in any way, but then it increases, and the pump begins to emit, first from time to time, and then constantly, a nasty hum. To fix this problem, you must first remove the circulation pump.
- We disconnect the washing machine from electricity and other communications.
- Unscrew the pan, if there is one at all.
- As soon as we remove the pan, the pump will be in front of our eyes.
- We disconnect the chip with wires and pipes, first loosening the clamps.
- Having unhooked the pump from the pipes, do not rush to pull it towards you. There are two more wires attached to the back of it, which need to be carefully unhooked.
Having removed the circulation pump, you should begin disassembling it.First, disconnect the block with the heating element from the electric motor. It is difficult to remove, so be careful not to break anything. Next, remove the impeller and pull out the anchor with pliers. At the base of this armature, deep in the body, the culprit of our problem is installed - the rear support bearing. We pull it out using tweezers. Under the bearing there is a rubber gasket, which also needs to be inspected for wear.
If the gasket is intact, you don’t have to touch it, but the bearing will have to be changed. By the way, our craftsmen do not always replace this part, since it can be difficult to obtain. More often they resort to boring the bearing, which takes a little time and has a good effect. In any case, the bearing restored in this way will safely last for several more years. As soon as we replace the bearing, you can assemble the circulation pump in the reverse order and install it in place.
Drainage pump
For example, we checked the circulation pump and made sure that it was not the problem, then why is the dishwasher humming? The answer to this question should be sought somewhere in the area of the drainage pump. It is not at all difficult to understand that the cause of the problem lies precisely in the pump. Listen to the point at which the dishwasher starts making an unpleasant sound. If this happens exclusively when the "home assistant" is discharging waste water, 99% of the reason is in the sump pump. Let's take it off.
- We remove everything unnecessary from the dishwasher, including remaining water.
- Turn off the machine.
- Place the dishwasher on its side.
- We dismantle the pallet.
- Unhook the hose from the pump by loosening the clamp.
- Disconnect the electrical wiring.
- Unscrew the screws holding the part and remove the pump.
When removing the pump, be careful not to lose or damage the O-rings.
Next we need to disassemble the pump itself and find out the reason for this hum. Pay special attention to the impeller. If it is deformed, then it is better to replace it, or better not to bother and change the entire pump. This part is inexpensive; in principle, it is not worth repairing.
Having installed the new pump, we assemble the machine in the reverse order and use the updated dishwasher, which will no longer bother you with a disgusting and intrusive hum. When assembling and disassembling dishwasher parts, be careful and then everything will be fine. Good luck!
