Pros and cons of a sink above the washing machine
Small bathrooms are one of the main problems of many Soviet and Russian apartments. Because of this, it is often necessary to come up with non-standard solutions for organizing space. A sink above the washing machine is one of the most common ways to combat the lack of space in the bathroom, which can save up to one meter. We will analyze this option in detail, whether it is good, whether it has serious disadvantages, and what are the common stereotypes about it.
The main advantages of this placement of the sink and machine
Let’s not wait too long, let’s immediately move on to the pros and cons of a sink above a washing machine; fortunately, there are many of them. Often, the advantages of such placement are not much greater than the disadvantages, but it is the positive aspects that turn out to be much more significant than the negative ones. According to statistics, approximately half of the owners of small apartments install a sink above the washing machine in order to save space. Why do they do this?
- The most banal, but at the same time the most important thing is saving space. Installing a sink above the washing machine allows you to save the useful space of the apartment, which is especially important for small studios with tiny bathrooms.
- With such an installation, no additional communications are needed, because the drain from the “home assistant” will be carried out through a special siphon, which is often included with new sinks. Because of this, everything necessary for connection will be provided immediately upon purchase.
- This solution allows you to make the bathroom stylish, because household appliances will be hidden by a beautiful decorative panel, which will obviously look much nicer in the interior than ordinary household appliances.
- This will allow you not to obscure the hallway or kitchen with large equipment, which is especially important for small rooms where there is no place to place unnecessary devices.
Installing a washing machine in the bathroom is very practical, because it is often where dirty laundry is stored for washing.
This is where the benefits end. As you can see, there are enough of them to not even think about other options for placing household appliances, but first we still suggest that you first study the disadvantages of installing a sink above a washing machine.
Why don't people want to place the sink and washing machine this way?
Usually the issue of installing a washing machine in small spaces is a resolved issue, but several factors can still stop it. Here is a list of shortcomings.
- The height of the sink, under which the appliances are built, is approximately 10 centimeters higher than the standard one. This is not a very significant difference, especially for tall people, but it can be a problem for short people and also for children. However, even in such a situation, the height is rarely much more than 94 centimeters, so all users quickly get used to it.
- Because of this solution, the maximum load of laundry may suffer, since such built-in equipment can load from 3 to 8 kilograms of dirty clothes at a time. This occurs due to the installation of a machine under the sink with a depth of up to 50 centimeters.
Most often, a sink is installed above a washing machine with a load of 5 kilograms.
- From a sink with a shallow depth, and only one should be installed in order to somehow reduce the height of the set, water can actively splash out. Therefore, you will either have to sacrifice a small height, or install a sink with a minimum depth, for example, Aqua Symphony Solo Jazz, whose height is only 8 centimeters and the internal depth is 7. Before buying a sink, be sure to read customer reviews - this will allow you to understand how well the water drains whether the sink has a good slope, whether it causes splashes.
- There is no legroom under the sink - perhaps the strangest complaint, because not everyone needs space under the sink, especially to place their feet there. Users often stand 10 centimeters from the sink, giving them plenty of room to place their feet in front of the sink while washing their hands, brushing their teeth, or performing other hygiene routines. If you still have concerns about free space, you can simply take a larger sink and push the washing machine a little deeper. It doesn't look very nice, but it won't get in the way of your legs.
- Finally, it is worth noting the mounting, because the sink above the washing machine must be installed not on the equipment itself, but on special brackets. Thus, it is important that the wall is very dense and does not collapse due to the heavy weight of the sink. This is especially true for houses with plasterboard walls. But even in this case, you can find a solution - for example, buy lightweight Marka 1 sinks.
This completes the list of shortcomings. As we said initially, the advantages of such an organization of space are obvious, and therefore outweigh any disadvantages, especially rather dubious ones, such as placing feet under the sink.
