How to turn off the timer on a washing machine?
Modern washing machines allow housewives to monitor the washing time by displaying the remaining minutes of the cycle. As a rule, from the moment it starts, the washing machine counts back seconds, and stops only when “00:00” is displayed. But often the time is confused or not displayed, and along with it the machine itself stops working properly. To fix the problem and continue washing, you will have to turn off the timer, repair it, or replace it with a new one. We will describe in detail below how to do this and when.
How does the timer work?
The operating principle of the timer and its design do not depend on the type of download or brand. And expensive washing machines from LG, Samsung, and more budget ones Indesit and Candy, both front-mounted machines and vertical semi-automatic machines are equipped with an identical time indicator. A standard counter consists of:
- synchromotor;
- gearbox;
- contacts;
- gears.
No less important is the plastic shell, in which special grooves are provided, due to which the motor functions, and with them the rest of the timer elements.
The principle of their operation is similar to a clock mechanism, only connected through contacts to the machine control system.
The type of installed indicator depends on the installed wiring. He can be:
- Hybrid. It is an improved mechanical version, therefore more reliable and durable.
- Electronic. It is multifunctional, as it allows you to simultaneously turn on several programs, set a delay start, pre-wash or additional rinse.But it is very vulnerable and can break due to voltage surges or system failures of the washing machine.
You can find out what type of timer is installed on the machine from the user manual. But most often there is no need to go through the instructions - almost all modern models are equipped with electronic indicators. So if there is a start delay on the washing machine or the year of manufacture of the unit is not earlier than 2014, then you will have to deal with a multifunctional device.
Disabling a working element
First of all, the timer must be turned off, and the circuit for turning it off is the same for most washing machines. To do this, you do not have to disassemble the case: just hold down the “Start\Cancel” button until all the lights on the dashboard blink. Then the machine will reset the settings, including the washing time.
For machines equipped with a delay start function, a single “reboot” will not help. The system will save the data and after startup will again display the previous minutes. You can get rid of the set timer by holding down the “Start\Cancel” key again.
There is one exception - Hotpoint-Ariston brand washing machines. These units have a special button on the dashboard, indicated by a schematic image of a dial. If you press it one to four times, you can set the desired delay time for the start of the cycle, and a fifth press deactivates the timer.
Here, to turn off the clock, just press the “hour” key 5 times.
What if the element fails?
The need to remove the time from the display occurs when the machine suddenly stops. A faulty timer immediately leads to a forced termination of the wash, since without a countdown the system will not be able to monitor the cycle and perform the corresponding tasks. The indicator just doesn’t fail, there are serious reasons for this.
- Voltage surges. Sudden changes can damage the washing machine's software, which in turn begins to glitch. The problem can only be solved by reinstalling the software.
- Mechanical damage. Careless operation, impacts to the body - all this can affect the functioning of the timer.
- Moisture ingress. Metal gears, when wet, rust and stop. They will have to be replaced or cleaned.
- Excessive heating of the heating element. A faulty heating element can “accelerate” to too high temperatures, which will lead to overheating of the control module, short circuit, fire or melting of the plastic elements of the timer.
Before understanding the reasons, you should promptly detect a malfunction of the timer. You won't be able to skip a strip - any machine, be it from LG, Kandy or Samsung, will automatically stop working. But you can diagnose the failure of the clock mechanism using the following signs:
- the washing machine does not start, although there is no problem with the electrical network;
- the running cycle stops and is not activated when any of the available modes is selected;
- The display shows an absolutely incorrect time (for example, “99:99”);
- All dashboard lights are on or flashing.
It is useless to try to restore the operation of the machine by rebooting - it is necessary to find out the reason for the stop and eliminate the malfunction. If the problem is with the timer, you will have to repair it or replace it with a new one.You can do this yourself or with the help of a wizard.
How to fix the problem?
Self-repair is possible, although it will bring a lot of difficulties. First you need to turn off the timer, dismantle it and buy a similar part. It is better to choose a branded spare part so as not to make a mistake with the size and quality. Then we proceed like this:
- download the software suitable for the timer;
- install the program on your computer and test it;
- install the indicator in the machine;
- connect the washing machine to the PC;
- flashing the system.
The timer is not an additional function, but the main option on which the entire functioning of the machine is based. If it malfunctions, the machine will not start, so there is no point in delaying repairs.
