Washing a swan's down blanket in a washing machine
Bedding with artificial swan down is durable, soft, practical and easy to care for. Cleaning such blankets and pillows is not difficult, but several important rules must be followed. Otherwise, the feathers will be damaged, deformed and lose their original properties. You can wash your swan down blanket in the washing machine, by hand, or by dry cleaning. The first two options are more convenient and cheaper, let’s look at them in more detail.
Should you trust a blanket to a machine?
Washing a down and feather blanket in a washing machine is simple, convenient and completely safe. Many housewives in vain choose hand washing, fearing the mechanics of the washing machine. In fact, there is nothing wrong with automatic cleaning: you just need to set the mode, spin and temperature correctly:
- mode – “Down”, “Down blanket”, “Down jacket” or “Delicate wash”;
- temperature – up to 30 degrees;
- spin – up to 400 rpm.
Down duvets and pillows can be washed on a delicate cycle at temperatures up to 30 degrees.
It is important to be careful when choosing a detergent. It is not recommended to use ordinary powders, as aggressive and bleaching components can damage the fluff. It is better to add special gels for down products.
Traditional wash
You can go the traditional route and hand wash your down and feather blanket. The rules are the same: avoid high temperatures, spin, aggressive detergents and intense friction. Powders, chlorine-containing bleaches and alkaline compounds are also prohibited, as they settle in the fibers, are not washed out, spoil textiles, discolor the fabric and crumple the filler.
If there are no strong stains on the bedspread, then proceed as follows:
- fill the bathtub with cool water and add salt to it;
- soak the blanket for 30-40 minutes;
- then gently squeeze without twisting and dry.
You cannot wring out blankets made from swan's down - the product will irrevocably lose its original shape.
If there are stains or an unpleasant odor on the cover, after soaking, change the water, foam the gel in it and wash the contaminated areas. To remove old dirt, you need to lay out the bedspread and rub it with a soapy sponge. The most difficult stage is rinsing, which must be repeated at least three times.
As soon as the water becomes completely clear, you can finish rinsing. All liquid from the bath is drained, and the blanket is left at the bottom for another 30-40 minutes to allow moisture to drain freely. Afterwards, the product is pressed down with your hands, easily wrung out and sent to dry.
Drying the product
Swan down and feathers dry quickly, but if dried incorrectly, the filler can become crumpled, deformed and lose its original properties. To prevent this from happening, you need to abandon the clothesline and dry the bedspread only in a horizontal position.
It is allowed to spread the product on the grass, table or floor. In any case, it is recommended to first cover the selected surface with a dry terry towel, which is changed when wet.
A blanket with down dries in 1.5-2 hours.
It takes about 1.5-2 hours for a duvet to dry in the sun. If it is not possible to take the blanket outside, then you need to open the windows wide, ensuring free air conditioning. During drying, the filler is periodically whipped and straightened, which will help speed up drying and prevent fluff from clumping.
