How to clean the drain pump in a Samsung washing machine?
Everyone knows that automatic washing machines require timely maintenance. It is necessary to periodically clean the debris filter, rinse the powder receptacle, and wipe the surface of the drum. If during the next wash the “home assistant” starts buzzing and cannot drain the water from the tank, it means that the machine urgently needs cleaning. The pump is probably clogged; it will be worse if the pump fails altogether. Let's figure out how to clean the drain pump in a Samsung washing machine with your own hands and how to prevent it from clogging.
Finding and dismantling parts
To clean the pump, you will need a minimum set of tools. The pump is located inside the washing machine body, in its lower part. During the work you will need:
- screwdrivers (phillips and slotted);
- a dry rag and a container to collect the water remaining in the drain system;
- wrench.
Getting to the pump is quite simple; the manufacturer has foreseen the need for periodic cleaning of the pump, so it has simplified access to the element as much as possible.
Before starting work, disconnect the SMA from the power supply and turn off the water supply tap.
If you are planning to disassemble an automatic machine for the first time, it is better to photograph each step. This will help you avoid mistakes when reassembling the washer. The algorithm of actions will be as follows:
- open the special hatch located on the front panel of the machine body from below. This can be done using a slotted screwdriver;
- Unscrew the bolt securing the garbage filter;
- tilt the washer slightly back, place a container under the body to collect water, cover the floor with a rag;
- Start unscrewing the drain filter from right to left.At this time, water will flow out of the system. Wait until the waste liquid is completely removed;
- lay the automatic machine on its side for the convenience of further work;
- carefully turning the pump from right to left, recess it into the machine body and remove it out;
- disconnect the wires from the pump, loosen the clamps and remove the pipes.
This way the part will be in your hands. You can start cleaning the pump. Let's figure out how to remove the blockage correctly.
Part cleaning algorithm
Cleaning a pump mainly involves removing debris from the pump impeller. It is on its blades that hair and threads are wound, and small objects get stuck between the wings. Therefore, you need to open access to the impeller. To disassemble the drain pump, you need to use a screwdriver to unscrew the two bolts connecting the housing halves. Having separated the parts, you can see the impeller (head).
The next steps will be to remove any debris from the head. It is also important to wipe down all areas inside the pump volute. Check the movement of the impeller - in working condition it should rotate intermittently.
After cleaning is completed, you need to assemble the element and put the pump in its original place. Then the pipes are connected to the pump, secured with clamps, and the wiring is connected. Next, the garbage filter is screwed in and the technical hatch is closed. Upon completion of assembly, you should check whether the equipment works. If the cycle is completed without leaks, the machine will not buzz and quietly drain the water, which means that the pump cleaning was successful.
If cleaning the element does not solve the problem, you will have to replace the drain pump.
In this case, a replacement part is purchased whose characteristics fully correspond to the standard one.
To prevent the pump from getting dirty
External unfavorable factors contribute to clogging of drain system elements. We are talking about hard, insufficiently clean tap water and low-quality laundry detergents. Also, hair, fluff, wool, and threads are washed off from things scrolled in the drum. Buttons and snaps can come off from clothing and also get into the pump.
To reduce the likelihood of pump contamination, you should:
- use powders exclusively for automatic machines;
- wash clothes in special bags;
- place a filter in front of the water intake hose in the SMA;
- Clean the garbage filter periodically.
These simple measures will help prevent debris from getting into the pump. By following the recommendations, users will be able to avoid problems with blockages in the drain system and extend the trouble-free life of the SMA.
