Drying the membrane in a dryer
Every day, household appliances are becoming more and more advanced, so new dryers can even process things that were previously prohibited from being placed in a machine. Given the gentle operating modes of the equipment, users sometimes even try to dry the membrane in a dryer. Let’s figure out whether it’s possible to do this and dry the membrane fabric in an automatic “home assistant.”
We remove moisture from the membrane correctly
Today, smart household appliances can gradually increase the drying temperature, as well as better control it, which has made it possible to dry even items made of wool and other delicate materials in the device. But drying the membrane in the dryer is still not recommended, as it poses too high a risk to clothing.
This is due to the fact that the product can suffer both from high temperature and from being very hot in a confined space where there is no air flow. Therefore, after just a few dryings on the most gentle programs, a thing made of membrane fabric will still lose its properties. Therefore, even if the machine gradually increases the temperature, which ultimately does not exceed 40 degrees Celsius, the clothes can still become unusable due to the operating cycle in the automatic dryer.
The membrane should be dried using the classical method, placing it in a shaded and well-ventilated area, where there will be no heaters, radiators, hot household appliances or other heat sources near it.If a jacket or other large item is made from membrane fabric, then it is better not to place it immediately on a hanger or clothesline, but first carefully lay it out on a horizontal surface, where it will dry naturally. Only when it dries and remains a little damp can it be moved to a hanger.
Ironing the membrane is undesirable and impractical, because the membrane fabric itself straightens out if it is dried correctly. After complete drying, the product can be treated with a special impregnation to improve its protective properties and extend its service life.
Do you wash something like this correctly?
One of the main advantages of membrane jackets is that they are not dangerous to clean in an automatic washing machine. However, this is only relevant if the user has correctly configured the work cycle and followed all the expert recommendations. Step-by-step instructions for washing the membrane in SM are as follows:
- clean all local stains and other contaminated areas in advance;
- carefully place the clothes in the drum;
Do not try to load all the membrane fabric at once, because it should take up about two-thirds of the drum, otherwise there will be overload.
- add washing gel to the powder receptacle, or place a gel capsule directly into the drum;
- Set a program for processing synthetics, wool, or hand or delicate wash. If your SM model has a separate mode for membrane fabric, then select it;
- make sure that the maximum water heating does not exceed 40 degrees Celsius;
- also check the spin cycle, which should be minimal or completely turned off;
- Finally, activate the extra rinse function.
After these settings, all that remains is to start the “home assistant” and wait until the washing is completed. Usually it takes place at a temperature of 20-40 degrees Celsius and lasts from one to two hours, which depends on the model of the washing machine. Do not keep the jacket in the drum after the end of the working cycle - it is better to immediately take the item out, wring it out a little and wrap it in a dry cotton cloth or terry towel. This will prevent it from deteriorating due to an unpleasant musty odor and strong wrinkles, and will also allow you to quickly rid it of excess moisture, so that you can then begin proper drying.
When machine washing is not possible, you will have to clean the jacket yourself. To do this, you need to use a large container with water and detergent, in which you should soak the item for about half an hour. Once time has passed, carefully wash the dirty areas and then rinse the jacket thoroughly. There is no need to wring out after hand washing - just hang the item on hangers or clotheslines so that the liquid can drain freely.
Recommendations from experts
Experts advise against washing membrane clothes too often. The more often it is processed in a “home care”, the greater the chance that the fabric will lose its beneficial properties. Ideal cleanliness of washing - 1-2 times a year. It’s even better not to wash the item at all, so if your winter jacket or ski set hasn’t acquired stubborn stains over the season, you can simply brush off the dust and gently wipe it with a damp cloth or cloth.
Unfortunately, it is not always possible to keep things in perfect condition. Bad weather, strong physical activity, manufacturing defects - all this greatly affects the cleanliness of the product.Therefore, if an item becomes dirty and needs to be washed and then dried, a number of rules for processing the membrane should be followed.
- Carefully read the information on the clothing label, which contains all the recommendations for washing and drying the membrane.
- If the machine does not have a special cycle for membrane fabric, then you need to choose a hand wash mode, delicate, for synthetics or for wool.
- Be sure to turn off the spin cycle or set it to the minimum level.
- After washing, dry membrane products naturally, hanging things in a well-ventilated area away from heat sources, or in the fresh air, but not in direct sunlight.
- For washing, use only liquid detergents with a gentle composition, as powders and granules can damage the fabric.
- Rinse the items well so that household chemicals do not leave white streaks and drips on your clothes.
- Wash jackets and other membrane products no more than 1-2 times a year to keep things in good condition.
As an alternative to washing in household appliances, you can choose dry cleaning.
- It is better to use special impregnation than to increase the number of washes per season. This will not damage the item, but will only add more water-repellent properties, as well as better protection against dirt.
Thus, it is not difficult to care for winter jackets, ski sets and other clothes made of membrane fabric, but only if you follow the recommendations of specialists.
