Where should I put salt in my Indesit dishwasher?
Any dishwasher is an expensive pleasure, because it’s not enough to buy household appliances. You not only need to properly care for her, but also constantly buy additional products to care for her. And this is not only household chemicals for washing dishes and cutlery, but also a special salt that helps fight water hardness and saves key PMM components from damage. Therefore, before any work cycle, it is very important to pour salt into the dishwasher so that the machine serves you for many years. How much salt does a “home helper” need, where should it be added, and exactly how it works – we’ll tell you right now.
Where to look for the salt compartment?
Where is the salt bin located in Indesit dishwashers is the first question that usually worries new owners of this smart household appliance. As with all other dishwashers, the salt reservoir is located at the bottom of the washing chamber of the device, hidden by the lower dish tray. For the convenience of pouring salt granules, it is better to use a special funnel, which is usually supplied with the PMM.
Before pouring salt into the bunker for the first time, it is necessary to completely fill the compartment with water, the excess residue of which will easily go down the drain during the filling process.
If you purchased special “Three in One” type tablets, then they do not need to be crushed into the same bin, but should be placed in a special section. The tablet compartment is installed on the inside of the Indesit dishwasher door.
How much salt do you need?
There is no need to rush to load the salt, because first you should determine exactly how many salt granules you need to add.The exact values directly depend on the type of salt you plan to use for your Indesit dishwasher:
- specialized regenerating salt for PMM, for example, from the brands Finish, Somat and others;
- special tableted salt, for example, from Topperr;
- evaporation salt of the “Extra” class, which is occasionally used as a replacement for special salt for PMM;
- finally, tableted salt, based on the same “Extra” type substitute.
First of all, examine the packaging of the salt granules if you purchased specialized Indesit dishwasher salt. Typically, the product instructions indicate that salt should be added to the very top of the salt bin. Due to the fact that each dishwasher has a different salt reservoir, a different amount of salt can fit into it. On average, one kilogram of regenerating salt is placed in a salt container.
It is also worth pouring about a kilogram of ordinary table salt so that the bunker is completely filled. Three-in-one tablets must be added until the container for them is completely filled.
As for the frequency of adding salt, the Indesit dishwasher itself will help with this. Modern dishwasher models themselves tell housewives when it’s time to update the salt granules. To do this, the equipment activates the flashing of a special indicator on the dashboard, so if it lights up, you need to urgently add salt.
How is salt used?
To combat hard tap water, ion exchangers with a resin containing negatively charged chlorine ions are installed in household appliances. They attract magnesium and calcium impurities found in hard water to the device, causing the liquid to become much softer. If the ion exchanger does not work normally, then due to exposure to high temperatures, magnesium and calcium will form scale, which will settle on the heating element of the Indesit dishwasher, and over time it will fail. Also, due to excessively hard water, dishes and other tableware are washed less well than in soft water.
Why is special salt needed, and how does it help reduce liquid hardness? Regenerating salt affects hardness indirectly, because it is needed to restore chlorine ions in the ion exchanger, which will then work with the hardness of tap water.
The higher the water hardness, the higher the salt consumption, so take this into account in advance when planning the consumption of salt granules.
To determine the required hardness mode that should be set on the Indesit dishwasher, you should find out the water hardness level in the water supply. This can be done in several ways.
- Look at the official city water utility, where accurate, up-to-date information on water hardness and other indicators should be regularly published.
- Determine “by eye” using laundry soap, which needs to be foamed or soaped with a simple sponge. If the sponge is difficult to rinse and lathers poorly, then the water is hard.
- Inspect the taps in the house, the toilet, as well as other surfaces that often come into contact with water - if there is a layer of limescale on them, then the water is definitely hard. The faster the layer forms, the worse the tap water.
- You can also use the most accurate method - purchase test strips or a special device for measuring liquid hardness.
Please note that the hardness of water in the water supply usually depends on the time of year, so it is better to measure fluid levels once a quarter.
Finally, the last way to check is a special water hardness table compiled for all regions of the country. Such a table is compiled by experts, so there is no reason not to trust it. This table conveniently divides water into four types: soft, medium, hard and very hard.
Based on the data obtained, you can select the hardness level on your Indesit dishwasher. How to make this setting is always described in the official instructions or on the manufacturer’s website.
In the end, the most important thing is not to pour too much salt into the bunker, but to add salt regularly so that it is constantly in the tank. And the frequency of updating the salt granules depends only on the settings on the Indesit PMM and the hardness of the tap water in the area where you live.
