Tap for connecting the dishwasher to the water supply
Correctly and securely connecting the dishwasher to the water supply is very important, especially if you live on the top floor of an apartment building. To organize the connection of the “iron assistant” conscientiously, it is necessary not only to select the correct connection diagram, but also the appropriate components, in particular a tap, tee, couplings, clamps, etc. There are no trifles in such a matter; a small leak formed due to a weak connection can result in expensive repairs in your neighbors’ apartment at your expense.
Which faucet to choose: general recommendations
Let's start with the fact that when organizing the connection of the dishwasher to the water supply through a mixer or bypass, you need to think not only about the quality of the taps, but also all components without exception, including hoses, the pipes themselves and those elements that ensure the normal functioning of the plumbing system. Most often, when connecting a dishwasher, craftsmen use a so-called tee, which has a built-in faucet, in other words, a tee faucet. There are general recommendations for purchasing such a crane.
- Do not buy a tee tap (or another type of tap) made of plastic or silumin. Nowadays there are both brass and bronze taps on sale - they are much better and will last longer.
- When buying a tee tap, check the integrity of its thread. Even the slightest chips and gouges on the edge of the thread should alert you.
- Pay attention to the water shut-off mechanism. Experts say that it is better to take a faucet with a ball-type shut-off mechanism, as it is much more durable and reliable.
- The appearance of the faucet does not matter, because it will be hidden, but ease of use plays an important role. If the tap has an inconvenient shut-off valve, you will not be able to quickly turn off the water in the event of an accident and, as a result, minimize the damage. Therefore, before purchasing, inspect the faucet, turn its valve, make sure that it turns easily and conveniently.
Note! The ball-type water shut-off mechanism lasts longer because it is less susceptible to the mineral deposits in the water that settle on its interior over time.
What type of faucet you will have to choose will depend on the developed connection diagram for the dishwasher. In our opinion, the simpler the diagram, the better, but there are all sorts of situations, so we decided to look at possible connection diagrams a little later, but first, let’s talk about the types of taps and other components that can be used in this case.
What taps can be used to install a “dishwasher”?
Since our article is mainly about taps, we’ll start the story with the typology of taps that will be suitable for connecting a dishwasher. A crane is useful for these purposes:
- tee;
- angular;
- double flow;
- with four terminals.
The tap tee is used in 95% of cases, since it is used in the simplest, most common and reliable connection schemes. The tee provides a minimum number of connections, which means the likelihood of leakage is reduced. It is easy to install and understandable to everyone without exception, even outright amateurs.The angle type valve is so called because its terminals are bent at right angles. Such a tap is installed on a ready-made water pipe outlet.
The double flow faucet has two completely straight outlets with a shut-off mechanism and a valve in the middle; it is also installed on a ready-made water pipe outlet for connecting a dishwasher through it. The four-way valve is one of the most complex. It has recently been used more and more often when connecting several consumers to the water supply, although when using such a tap, problems with switching may arise, because there is only one mechanism, but two devices.
Important! A four-way tap allows you to connect two household appliances to the water supply at once with a minimum number of connections, which will ensure maximum reliability of organized communications.
I would also like to say a few words about the components that may be and will probably be required to connect the dishwasher to the water supply through a mixer or in another way. What are these components?
- Inlet hose. During the process of connecting the dishwasher, it may turn out that the standard hose that comes with the dishwasher is not long enough. Fortunately, inlet hoses of different lengths are available for sale.
- Fittings of various types. There are a great variety of fittings, and they are used if it was not possible to create a simple connection diagram. Among them are: adapters, couplings, crosses, compensators, contours and others.
- Materials that ensure normal sealing of connections. As a rule, we are talking about a special fum tape or simply “fumka”.It is wound onto threaded connections in a special way, after which this connection stops allowing water to pass through.
Schemes for connecting the “dishwasher” to the water supply
There are a great variety of schemes for connecting a dishwasher to a water supply. We will consider only the most basic ones, without touching on issues of preparation for connection, features of the progress of work, etc. All this is described in detail in an article on the relevant topic, namely, How to connect a dishwasher to water supply and sewerage.
The first scheme involves connecting the dishwasher through a mixer. Strictly speaking, the connection is made, of course, not through the mixer, but through the taps of the water pipe that go to the mixer. How it's done?
- The water is shut off and the flexible hose that goes from the water pipe outlet to the mixer is disconnected.
- We screw a tee tap into the junction of the pipe outlet and the hose.
- We connect the pipe outlet and the hose through the tap tee. Now the cold water pipe outlet will serve not only to supply the faucet, but also the dishwasher. At the same time, the mixer retains full functionality.
- We screw the flow filter to the free outlet of the tee, and then screw the inlet hose to the filter, which in turn is connected to the dishwasher.
The second scheme is used when the cold water supply pipe is specially designed for a dishwasher or washing machine. In this situation, the connection is made not through a mixer, but directly, and you can use not only a tee, but also a flow-through or even an angle tap. The order of work, in this case, looks even simpler.
- The water is shut off and the plug is removed from the pipe outlet.
- We screw the tap of the required type to the outlet.
- Screw the flow filter to the tap.
- We screw the inlet hose to the filter. Well, we connect the hose to the washing machine.
To summarize, when connecting a dishwasher to the water supply, it is very important to choose the right components, including a suitable faucet. It must be made of high-quality materials and be convenient, so that later there will be no problems with emergency switching or disconnecting the dishwasher from the water supply. In addition, it is important to choose the correct connection diagram for the machine so that it works flawlessly in the future.
