Why does my LG washing machine hum when washing?
As a rule, the washing machine always hums when washing: sometimes quietly, sometimes loudly. But if a little noise from the washing machine is considered normal, then a strong hum and uncharacteristic knocks signal obvious problems. In order not to aggravate the situation, it is necessary to diagnose the machine and fix the problem. It is better to immediately involve a professional from the service center, but if you wish, you can do it yourself. How exactly?
Is the noise normal or not normal?
First you need to figure out whether the audible hum in the LG washing machine exceeds the permissible limit or not. To do this, we look for the operating instructions for the machine and study the information about the maximum noise level. As a rule, models from this manufacturer are equipped with direct drive, so the noise is within 50-60 dB.
A noise of 50-60 dB is not quiet, but not too loud either. True, only a professional repairman can determine by ear how loud the machine is humming. For accurate measurements, ordinary users will need a special device - a sound level meter. If you find a Chinese-made copy, it will not cost much, but it will clearly show whether you need to worry about the emanating noise.
Normally, an LG washing machine operates at a noise level of 50-60 dB.
When the need to buy a sound level meter is not attractive, you can go the other way and compare the audible sound with the already measured noise “levels”. Thus, 50 dB is typical for a working typewriter or standard human conversation. The 70 dB mark is suitable for a noisy street, we hear 95 dB while in the subway, and 120 dB is produced by a jackhammer during operation.Based on the examples given, it is easier to track the normality of the hum, and if you suspect, begin diagnostics.
Why does the appliance erase too loudly?
Normally, a direct drive washing machine from LG washes almost silently, the maximum starts to make noise during the spin cycle, accelerating to 800-1200 rpm. But if the washing machine begins to hum at the start, when the drum practically does not rotate, then there is an obvious problem. One of them is incorrect installation of the machine.
When the washing machine buzzes when it first starts, it is often due to the transportation bolts not being removed. These fasteners are indispensable when transporting the machine gun, as they reliably fix the tank in one position, preventing it from loosening and deforming. But before operating the unit, they must be removed and plugs inserted. Otherwise, when starting, the motor will try to spin the fixed drum, which will lead to disastrous consequences. Another common installation mistake is an uneven housing. Ideally, household appliances should stand on a flat surface, and if this is not possible, then the legs must be carefully adjusted.
This leads to noise when rinsing and many internal malfunctions of the machine. Among them:
- Cracks on the tank. Needs replacement.
- Loose bolts on the motor play. You need to tighten the screws tighter.
- Loose fasteners on counterweights and upper springs. Remove the top cover and check if the bolts are loose. If the blocks themselves are damaged, we replace them.
- Worn bearings. A strong hum often occurs due to problems in the bearing assembly. It’s easy to confirm your guess: just spin the drum with the machine turned off and listen. If you hear a grinding or rattling noise, then the culprit has been found and the parts need to be replaced. To make a replacement, you will have to disassemble the unit almost completely, right down to removing the tank. Next, we’ll halve the container, knock out the worn bearings and install new ones. At the same time, we install new seals, which are responsible for sealing and protect the “rings”. The machine is assembled in the opposite direction.
Another reason is a dirty or incorrectly selected hatch seal. Often the rubber band rubs against the drum, forming rubber crumbs, leading to a hum. It’s easy to fix the situation: attach fine sandpaper with tape to the edge of the tank and start rinsing. This way the friction area is cleaned, and all debris is washed away with water.
A foreign object has entered the tank
Let’s take a closer look at the scenario where a foreign object gets into the tank. As practice shows, this is what happens most often and causes a strong hum. But besides sound discomfort, there are more serious consequences, including tank leakage.
The fact is that many metal objects, keys, bra underwires, coins, “tongues”, getting into the plastic tank, get stuck between it and the drum. At the same time, the machine continues to work, and the stuck item rubs against the surface, pierces plastic and even metal. The result is leaking, humming and knocking.
It is not difficult to determine that the source of noise is in a foreign object: grinding, creaking and humming will be heard when the drum rotates throughout the cycle. It is logical that there is only one solution to the problem - to get the thing. To do this, you will have to remove the back panel of the washing machine, unscrew the bolts holding the heating element and remove the heater, and illuminate the vacated hole with a flashlight. As soon as the keys or coin are found, we stick our hand in, hook it with pliers or make a hook from metal wire.
How to avoid such problems?
Knowing what it can be, it is easier to take care of the machine in advance and prevent the occurrence of hum and vibration. You just need to remember a few simple rules for operating the machine. These are the simplest recommendations.
- Do not exceed the maximum permitted weight of laundry.
- Do not run the cycle several times in a row, giving the machine a break.
- Alternate cycles with high and low temperatures.
- Clean the machine in a timely manner, especially the garbage filter.
- Carefully check items loaded into the drum for items forgotten in pockets.
- Wash woolen clothes, as well as items with metal inserts and locks, in special protective bags.
- If very hard water flows in the water supply, then it must be softened with special means.
- At the end of the wash, run an “empty” cycle to wash the machine and remove soap deposits from the surfaces.
After using the machine, it is better to leave the hatch door and dispenser open so that air circulates freely and mold does not form on the surfaces.
If your LG washing machine is making a loud noise, then this “symptom” cannot be ignored. It is necessary to urgently begin diagnostics, otherwise the problem will only worsen and lead to irreparable consequences.

Thank you, expanded :)
It feels like I bought a Zhiguli.
And if the hum appears sometimes, then what could it be?
Hello. Can I ask you a question?
