Washing a double blanket in the washing machine

Washing a double blanket in the washing machineFor a healthy sleep, you need clean bed linen and clean accessories - pillows and blankets. With the latter, simple shaking is not enough; complete cleaning with detergents is needed. Washing a double blanket in a washing machine is not easy - the product is bulky, heavy and needs careful cleaning. We suggest you figure out what kind of washing machine is needed and whether there is an alternative cleaning option.

Should you push a blanket into the machine?

Not every washing machine can accommodate a single blanket, and even more so a double blanket. Such products are many times larger and heavier, so they can only be washed in equipment with a capacity of 10-12 kg. Attempts to push a blanket into a 5 or even 8 kg drum will be fruitless and dangerous. Firstly, it cannot be washed or rinsed. Secondly, there is a high probability of imbalance with subsequent breakdown of the machine.

If you don’t have a suitable washing machine at home, then there are only three options left:

  • self-service laundries;
  • dry cleaning;do your laundry at the self-service laundry
  • handwash.

The third method is cheaper, but longer and more difficult. If you have a deep bath and the opportunity to attract an assistant, then you can begin manual cleaning.

Blanket

It is more difficult if the blanket is made of wool. Large woolen ones become very heavy when wet, so standard washing machines designed for 5-7 kg cannot cope with such weight. It is much safer to wash the bedspread using the traditional method. Hand washing is carried out as follows:

  • fill the bath with water heated to 30-40 degrees (it can’t go higher, wool doesn’t like high temperatures);
  • dissolve detergent in water and foam (it is better to choose special gels for wool, since knitting does not tolerate aggressive powders);
  • dip a blanket in the soapy solution and leave to soak for 20-30 minutes;
  • change the water, add detergent again and foam;washing a wool blanket
  • immerse the blanket in soapy water for another 10 minutes;
  • gently rub the stains with your hands, without a brush;
  • rinse, changing the water until the soap is completely removed;
  • drain the water and leave the blanket at the bottom of the bath, allowing the water to drain;
  • without twisting, squeeze out.

You cannot wring out a wool blanket in the usual way - the knitting is easily deformed and stretched. It is better to leave the item slightly damp and spread it on a horizontal surface to dry. The main thing is not to place the blanket in direct sun or near heaters.

Their holofiber product

A double blanket made of holofiber and padding polyester also will not fit into a standard automatic washing machine. It is better to wash such products by hand. Fill the bath a quarter full with warm water, dissolve the product, lower the blanket and soak for an hour. Then we rub the contaminated areas or trample the entire surface with our feet. Then the soapy liquid is drained, a new one is collected, and the blanket is rinsed until the gel is washed out.

A blanket with padding polyester and holofiber is washed every three months.

There is no need to immediately remove the wet blanket - let it sit for another 1-1.5 hours so that the glass absorbs more excess moisture. Then we send the blanket to dry, laying it horizontally in a ventilated room. Be sure to feel and “beat” the filler, since padding polyester often becomes deformed and crumples when wet. Heaters and direct ultraviolet light are prohibited - only natural drying.washing a holofiber blanket

Product with down filling

The duvet is also hand washed. Particular attention is paid to the detergent: the use of powder mixtures is strongly discouraged, since the granules are less easily washed out, settle in the fibers and deform the fluff. Ideally, you purchase special gels for down jackets with special components that prevent the filling from matting.washing a duvet

For the procedure, fill a bathtub or a large basin, beat the gel into foam, immerse the product in the solution and soak for 60 minutes. Stains are washed separately with laundry soap or a delicate stain remover. Rinse the blanket at least 3 times and dry it in a warm, dry place. It is important that drying occurs naturally and does not last more than two days, otherwise mold will grow in the damp filler.

What do the professionals advise?

There are some tips to keep in mind when washing blankets. It is recommended to check the product for damage, remove stains with a gentle bleach, and vacuum thoroughly before immersing in the bath. Dry in a ventilated place.

If you wash it in an automatic washing machine, roll up the blanket. It is also recommended to weigh the blanket before loading and ensure that at least a third of the drum remains empty.
